HEARTBREAKING: Beloved Jeopardy! Champion D!es at 53 After Brain C@ncer Battle

Jeopardy! is mourning one of its most beloved champions this week. Dr. Courtney Shah, a seven-time winner, d!ed on July 22 at age 52. She passed away at home after a long battle with brain c@ncer. Her daughter, Maya Shah, shared the news in a tribute post online.
Maya shared that her mother d!ed peacefully at home early that morning.
“I don’t know what you believe about d3ath, but I like to think that she’s at peace now,” Maya wrote in a tribute to her mother. “We loved her in this world, and we loved her out of this world, and we’ll go on loving her.”
“Thank you for your grace in all of this,” she continued. “It hasn’t been easy. It will continue not to be easy. Hug your loved ones.”
Shah first appeared on Jeopardy! in 2021 and quickly became a fan favorite. She won seven straight games, earning $118,558 in total winnings. The following year, she competed in the 2022 Tournament of Champions. Shah reached the quarterfinals there, adding another $5,000 to her earnings.

Outside the studio, Shah taught history at Lower Columbia College in Washington. The school said Shah had “a gift for bringing history to life.” Students and colleagues echoed that sentiment across social media this week. Many said they never forgot having her as a teacher before her Jeopardy! run.
Shah learned of her brain c@ncer diagnosis in early 2026. She continued sharing updates with fans throughout her treatment. In March, she learned chemotherapy and radiation were no longer working. She transitioned to hospice care and stayed at home for her final months.
Even during treatment, Shah’s love for trivia never faded. Friends said she kept firing off answers before anyone else in the room. That passion for the show has always carried into everyday Jeopardy! moments for fans.
