Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum avoided Donald Trump like the plague.

Stakes high for Canada as Carney jets off to Asia - RTHK

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum kept her distance from Donald Trump after FIFA President Gianni Infantino invited them in for a selfie on Friday.

The Mexican and American leaders joined Infantino and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on stage as the FIFA World Cup 2026 draw got underway in Washington, D.C., with their countries all set to host the prestigious tournament.

Trump, always one for the moment, ensured he was on hand during the Club World Cup trophy presentation after Chelsea FC won the inaugural competition during the summer and will no doubt find a way to take center stage once the upcoming tournament kicks off.

But it doesn’t appear that Sheinbaum will be sharing the spotlight. She wouldn’t even get too close to Trump for a selfie. Carney seemed to share the same sentiment.

Infantino, known to be close to Trump, called the three leaders on stage to serve as “draw assistants” before asking them all to come in for a selfie. He snuggled up to The POTUS, but Carney and Sheinbaum were noticeably aloof.

The apprehension from Carney and Sheinbaum wasn’t lost on social media.

“Sheinbaum and Carney standing as far away from Trump as the selfie will allow,” a viewer tweeted.

“Bruh, not Sheinbaum and the Canadian Prime Minister staying away from Trump when Infantino’s shameless ass wanted a selfie,” said another.

Carney, who referred to Canada’s inclusion as “the biggest of deals,” isn’t very fond of Trump. They had a falling out over trade negotiations and aren’t believed to be on speaking terms.

The Canadian leader previously said he would speak to Trump “when it’s appropriate,” asking reporters, “who cares?” after they inquired about their last conversation.

Meanwhile, the U.S., Canada, and Mexico were placed into groups D, B, and A, respectively. All three automatically qualified as host nations.
