Former NBA superstar Michael Jordan once explained to Golden State Warriors sharpshooter Steph Curry why he respects losing.

MJ didn’t lose once he got to the NBA Finals, winning on all six trips. But he did experience several heartbreaking playoff exits before he crossed the threshold to become a champion, with the Detroit Pistons proving a thorn in his side early on in his career.

The former Chicago Bulls superstar has somehow decided to step out of the shadows and become a special contributor to NBC later this year. With NBA basketball returning to the network next season after 23 years – a fitting number – they’re taking Jordan with them.

One of MJ’s most recent appearances in front of the camera came several years ago, when he sat down to talk golf with Steph Curry at the 2021 Ryder Cup.

The two icons would also discuss the idea of losing, with Jordan admitting it’s necessary and even claiming to respect it.

 

“I hate losing, it’s not even a question. But I respect losing. Because losing is a part of winning. You never just win, you gotta lose to win,” he said.

The six-time NBA champion went on to outline the mentality one should have after losing.

“Does it mean as much to us as it does to them? And if that’s the case, losing is going to hurt, you know, to a point where you would look at, ‘How can I do things differently? How can I change, how can I make this team better?’”

While His Airness didn’t do much losing on the court, he experienced a whole lot of it as a team owner with the Charlotte Hornets. It’s probably why he opted to sell his majority stake in the franchise and step back from decision-making.
