Jordan Mason is headed to short-term injured reserve. Ian Rapoport reported that the Vikings running back has a small fracture in his thumb and that the team has already fixed it. Kevin O’Connell said he should be back quickly. Short-term IR is the four-week window, not a season-ending stay.

Minnesota needed that clarity after a 39-22 win over Green Bay. Mason ran for 59 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries in that opener. Losing him still changes the backfield for a month. The club signed DeeJay Dallas off the practice squad to the 53-man roster and added Jerome Ford to the practice squad as extra insurance.
The timing is messy for Minnesota. Kyler Murray left the same game with a concussion, giving the keys to the car to Carson Wentz. Now the run game has to hold without the back who just produced in Week 1.

Dallas is a veteran change-of-pace piece, not a clone of what Mason just did against Green Bay. Ford gives the practice squad another body who has started games. Neither signing hides the drop-off if Minnesota wants the same physical run looks it used in Week 1. The offense already leans on Justin Jefferson to finish drives.
Mason has dealt with sudden workload swings before. In San Francisco, he took over on short notice when Christian McCaffrey sat.
