Mark Harmon, the beloved 74-year-old actor known for his iconic portrayal of Leroy Jethro Gibbs on NCIS, has reignited fans’ hopes with his recent return in NCIS: Origins. The crossover episode, which aired Tuesday night, marks a significant moment for fans who have long missed Gibbs’ presence since Harmon’s departure from the original NCIS series in 2021. While his appearance was brief, it has sparked speculation about whether this could lead to a more permanent return.
Hints of a Possible Comeback
In an interview with TV Insider, Harmon left the door open for future involvement in both NCIS: Origins and the main NCIS series. When asked about the possibility of a full-time return, he responded with a measured, “I don’t know.” He praised Origins showrunners Gina Monreal and David North, saying, “They’re really good. They had an idea and I liked it. I try to think about what’s best for the show.”
Harmon’s comments suggest that while he isn’t actively pursuing a return, he remains open to opportunities that align with the show’s direction. Reflecting on the similarities between Origins and the early days of NCIS, he noted, “This is on a similar path, which is not a bad idea if it works… So we’ll see.”
Returning to Gibbs’ Shoes
For Harmon, stepping back into the role of Gibbs felt natural and familiar. “Oh, that’s a comfortable spot,” he shared. “You have a big backlog of time together with people, and they’re special. That’s what 20 years in the saddle does – it gives you a comfort that’s rare.”
His remarks highlight the deep connection he has with the character and the cast, making it clear that Gibbs remains an integral part of his life, even after his departure.
Reflecting on His Departure
Harmon’s 2021 exit from NCIS marked the end of an era for the long-running series. At the time, he explained that it was “the right timing to push away a little bit.” In a 2024 interview with TVLine, he addressed the possibility of appearing in the eventual series finale, saying, “I don’t know. It’s really about feeling like you’re fulfilled with a role, or complete with a role.”
His return for NCIS: Origins suggests that while he may have stepped back from the spotlight, he hasn’t fully closed the chapter on Gibbs.
Fans’ Reactions and What’s Next
The crossover episode has been met with widespread excitement from fans, who have long hoped for Harmon to reprise his role. Social media buzzed with speculation about whether this appearance could pave the way for a more permanent return.
While Harmon remains noncommittal about his future with the franchise, his openness to new opportunities and his deep connection to the character leave the possibility on the table. For now, fans will have to wait and see if Gibbs will once again become a central figure in the NCIS universe.
As Harmon himself said, “So we’ll see.”
