NFL fans are convinced that Dillon Gabriel took a shot at teammate and fellow rookie Shedeur Sanders after being named the new starting quarterback.

After another disappointing performance by veteran Joe Flacco (16-of-34 for 184 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions) in Sunday’s 34-10 loss to the Detroit Lions. Now 1-3 on the season, Cleveland head coach Kevin Stefanski confirmed previous reports that Dillon Gabriel will get the nod for Week 5 against the Minnesota Vikings in London.

On Wednesday, Shedeur Sanders made headlines by giving mimed answers to reporters about being the No. 3 quarterback in Cleveland. Clearly, Sanders isn’t thrilled about remaining on the sidelines after Flacco’s benching.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Dillon Gabriel stated, “You wait for the perfect time, you’re going to be waiting your whole life.”

That sounds like a perfectly harmless quote on the surface, but many NFL fans can’t help but think that Gabriel was taking a shot at Shedeur Sanders.

“Second time taking a subtle shot at 12 🤔 being as he only expresses love and respect for his teammates ! Hope you ball out either way,” one fan said.

“Aight – that’s a sneak diss! We can’t spin that no other way. When he fails- I will be right here waiting on it!” another wrote.

“Aye on everything I love he sneak dissing what the 😂😂,” a fan commented.

“I mean Shedeur Sanders Song is called “Perfect Timing,” wrote a user.

“He bout to throw 4 picks,” said a fan.

“Nobody wants to watch this guy,” a user quipped.

Interpret that however you wish, but keep in mind that Gabriel and Sanders aren’t expected to be best friends. They’re both rookies who’ve been competing for the starting job in Cleveland since May, after all.

Only time will tell if Gabriel is cut out for the QB1 job in Cleveland, but he at least provides some hope to the franchise. Flacco wasn’t cutting it and was never a long-term option in his age-40 season.

This isn’t to say that Dillon Gabriel will definitely become a star for Cleveland, but he was a third-round pick for a reason. And he has plenty of football experience, with 18,722 passing yards and 155 touchdowns in six college seasons, per ESPN.

Gabriel at least has the chance to give Cleveland above-average quarterback play, something Flacco wasn’t going to do. If Gabriel and/or Sanders don’t cut it the rest of the way, then at least Cleveland will be in a good position to draft a top QB prospect next year.
