Patrick Mahomes might be 2-3 on the season, but he’s still undefeated when it comes to getting attention. The Kansas City Chiefs star quarterback decided to step away from football talk this week and dive straight into a debate that sports fans love to fight over, Kevin Durant or Shaquille O’Neal.
In a short clip posted on the Chiefs’ official X account, Mahomes didn’t hesitate when asked to pick between the two NBA legends. “I’m taking KD, longevity gives it to him,” he said with his trademark calm confidence.
That one line blew up instantly. Fans couldn’t believe that the face of the NFL would take Durant over one of the most dominant big men to ever play the game.
Of course, Mahomes just goes viral for everything. Just last week, Mic’d Up cameras caught him telling the refs to change a call, and they actually listened.

Mahomes’ reasoning sounded simple enough, but the internet rarely lets simplicity slide. Thousands of people got into social media, giving their explanation, arguing whether durability and longevity really go over pure dominance.
Many reminded Mahomes that Shaq owned an entire era, while others backed his point about KD’s sustained excellence over nearly two decades.
“Taking KD over Prime Shaw is definitely a choice,” one fan wrote.
“KD over Shaq is wild,” another commented.
It’s easy to see why Mahomes connects with Durant. Both are Texas guys who built their names through skill, work ethic, and consistency. Mahomes played at Texas Tech; Durant lit up the University of Texas before jumping to the NBA. That shared background might explain his loyalty.
Mahomes doesn’t seem too bothered by all these. He’s got bigger issues to handle, like helping the Chiefs climb out of their early-season hole before facing the Detroit Lions in Week 6. And while he’s showing plenty of love for KD, the quarterback has also shown plenty of heart lately. Earlier this month, Patrick Mahomes asked for prayers for Tyreek Hill’s recovery, and that’s how his compassion extends far beyond the game.
Whether it’s football, basketball, or social media debates, Mahomes is literally present everywhere.
