Rice missed a large portion of last season

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes (15) celebrates the touchdown by wide receiver Rashee Rice (4)LAPRESSE
Rashee Rice’s breakout campaign in 2024 was abruptly derailed. After an explosive three-game stretch-24 receptions, 288 yards, and two touchdowns-his season was cut short during a freak play against the Chargers.
A collision with quarterback Patrick Mahomes, while trying to chase down an interception, left Rice with a torn LCL and hamstring damage in his right knee. Mahomes shouldered the emotional burden.
“When I saw the replay, I felt like sh- that I hit Rashee.”
But Rice didn’t let the setback define him. By March 2025, he was already back on the grind, posting sprint drills on social media and hinting at a determined return.Mahomes took note.
“He looks really good,” the Chiefs quarterback said during offseason workouts in Texas.
“I don’t know what he’ll be able to do at OTAs, but here, he’s running routes and catching the football just fine.”
Rice was initially tapped to step into the WR1 role last season, and now-healthy again-he’s in position to reclaim that spotlight.
A reinvented receiving corps for 2025
Kansas City’s passing game faltered in 2024, thanks in part to injuries that turned the wide receiver room into a rehab ward. Hollywood Brown, signed to be a difference-maker, suffered a preseason shoulder injury and missed significant time. Though he returned to play a few games and posted 91 yards in the regular season, his playoff presence was minimal-five receptions for just 50 yards over three games.
Still, Mahomes hasn’t lost faith. Brown has re-signed for another year, and Mahomes sees bigger things ahead.
“When he gets the ball in his hands, he makes the offense go.”
Brown’s last great season came in 2021 with Baltimore, when he logged over 1,000 yards and six touchdowns. The Chiefs hope he can tap into that again.
With Rice nearing full strength, Brown healthy, and Xavier Worthy stepping into year two, Mahomes has plenty of firepower to fuel his mission.
“The goal is to get back to those explosive plays,” he said.
If all goes according to plan, Kansas City’s offense might be more dangerous than ever
