Patrick Mahomes has assigned some blame for Travis Kelce’s dropped touchdown pass on Sunday.

The Chiefs fell to the Eagles, 20-17, on Sunday. The Super Bowl 59 rematch, taking place at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, went down to the wire. Kelce, 35, had a chance to give the Chiefs the lead early in the fourth quarter, but he wasn’t able to come up with a touchdown catch. Instead, the Patrick Mahomes pass bounced off of his hands and went into the arms of an Eagles defender. Philadelphia picked off the pass and returned it into Kansas City territory. Several plays later, the Eagles found the end zone, increasing the lead to 10 points.

Kelce, who could be playing in his final NFL season, looked distraught on the sideline after his dropped pass.

Kelce’s teammates came to his defense following the dropped touchdown pass on Sunday afternoon.

“Back to work,” Chiefs defensive lineman George Karlaftis was heard telling Kelce postgame, according to The Athletic.

“That’s my guy,” Karlaftis added. “That’s what it is, win or loss: Back to work. Obviously the loss stings, and we’re going to learn a lot from it.”

Patrick Mahomes is blaming himself

Mahomes, who has thrown 72 total touchdown passes to Kelce, including the playoffs, is not blaming his tight end for the drop. Instead, he’s blaming himself.

The three-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback believes that he put the football too far out in front of Kelce. He believes that if he had hit Kelce closer to his chest, he would have caught it, fought through contact and scored.

“I think if I can put it on his body and not so far out in front of him,” Mahomes said, adding: “then he can catch it, take the hit and get in the end zone.”

Mahomes knows this can just be a small blip in the Kansas City season. However, the Chiefs are 0-2 for the first time since 2014.

“When you deal with adversity, it’s about how you deal with it,” Mahomes said. “Obviously, this isn’t how we wanted to start, but how are we going to respond? I’m excited for the next few weeks to see who wants to be challenged and how we can get back and really get after it.”

The Chiefs will look to get back into the win column in Week 3, taking on the New York Giants.

Kickoff is set for 8:20 p.m. E.T. on NBC.
