Three returning stars have been added to the Yellowstone spinoff Y: Marshals. Luke Grimes is already confirmed to be reprising his role as Kayce Dutton in the spinoff. Y: Marshals will follow Kayce Dutton, the youngest Dutton son, as he joins the U.S. Marshals in Montana, leaving his ranching days in the past.
Per Deadline, Gil Birmingham, Brecken Merrill, and Mo Brings Plenty are now joining the cast of Y: Marshals as well, and will be reprising their previous roles in the hit franchise. Merrill will be reprising his role as Tate Dutton, the son of Kayce, as Birmingham will be reprising his role as Thomas Rainwater, and Mo Brings Plenty reprising the role of Mo.
As for the newbies, the following three series regulars have also joined the cast as U.S. Marshals: Arielle Kebbel (Rescue: HI-Surf) as Belle, Ash Santos (Mayor of Kingstown) as Andrea and Tatanka Means (Reservation Dogs) as Miles. Additionally, Brett Cullen (Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty) will recur as Harry Gifford, who heads up the U.S. Marshals in Montana.
The Yellowstone spinoff follows Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes), who leaves ranching life behind to join an elite unit of U.S. Marshals, “combining his skills as a cowboy and Navy SEAL to bring range justice to Montana, where he and his teammates must balance family, duty and the high psychological cost that comes with serving as the last line of defense in the region’s war on violence,” reads the show’s official logline.
As previously reported, Logan Marshall Green (And Just Like That…) will play Pete Calvin, one of Kayce’s friends from his days in the military.
What This Update Means for Y: Marshals
Y: Marshals is still taking place in Montana, where Yellowstone took place, making it possible to see even more familiar faces in the future. It won’t be so difficult to write other cast members from Yellowstone into the show and create storylines for them, since they all still live in the same state and can easily cross paths.
One member of the Yellowstone cast who will not be reprising their role is Kelsey Asbille, who portrayed Tate’s mother, and Kayce’s wife. It is unknown why she is not going to be in the spinoff, but her absence will surely be acknowledged and explained during the show somehow.
