Ken Jennings holds several records from when he was a contestant on Jeopardy! He took over as host of the game show after Alex Trebek passed away. A decade after his record-breaking run, another contestant is hot on his heels. Keep reading to find out more about the ongoing rivalry.
Jeopardy! Contestant Comes For Ken Jennings’ Record
Ken Jennings was the kind of contestant Jeopardy! viewers had never seen before. He lucked out when the show made a surprising rule change shortly before he became a contestant. Previous winners could only return for a certain number of games. But under the new rule, the contestants could return for as long as they kept winning.

Ken Jennings’ run on Jeopardy! gained nationwide attention. New and old viewers tuned in each night during his 2024 streak. His streak lasted from June until November when he finally lost. He holds the record for 74 consecutive games won. No one has come close to beating that record, but another of his records is in serious jeopardy, pun intended.
New Jersey law student Jamie Ding has won 20 consecutive games. He tied another of Ken Jennings’ records on Thursday, April 9, when he correctly answered 45 clues in one episode. Ken Jennings previously set the record in 2004. Jamie King could possibly dethrone at least one of Ken Jennings’ Jeopardy records.
Viewers Claim Game Show Gone ‘Downhill,’ Why?
Jeopardy! hasn’t really seen another contestant as impressive as Ken Jennings. In fact, some viewers doubt they ever will. One disgruntled fan took to Reddit to ponder why the game show has gone “downhill” in recent years.
“Since around 2019 they’ve changed the types of questions to where it’s less about knowing something and more about deciphering the question itself.”
Other fans weighed in on whether the show is on the decline.
“I think there are little shifts and trends from season to season, but the main reason it seems more confusing is because you’re not keeping up with the vernacular as you age.”
“Downhill is subjective, but the questions have clearly gotten more obtuse / clever. I need to often pause the show and try to puzzle out what they are actually asking.”
“That’s a good way to see if the contestants are smart enough to figure things out, rather than just memorizing.”
“I always say you need to decipher the clue within the clue. They almost always give you something”
“I’m sure I read something that said they have deliberately increased the number of wordplay questions (i.e. there’s one every board) because they don’t want to encourage people just revising the J-Archive database.”
Most of the comments defended the long-running game show from the slander. Share your thoughts on whether the show has gone downhill and let us know if you think Jamie Ding will tie more of Ken Jennings’ records.
