He might wanna stay off of social media for a while.

Hockey fans are destroying Buffalo Sabres superstar and U.S. hockey Olympic gold medalist for his choice of clothing during Tuesday’s visit to the White House.

The U.S. men’s ice hockey team has faced significant backlash over its actions following Sunday’s thrilling gold medal game victory. For starters, they laughed at President Donald Trump’s insulting joke about the U.S. women’s team during his congratulatory message in the locker room.

All but five players from the men’s team (Jake Guentzel, Jake Oettinger, Jackson LaCombe, Kyle Connor and Brock Nelson) visited Trump at the White House on Tuesday. Most of those players later attended the State of the Union address in the evening.

Multiple American players took a photo with White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt. As you can see, Tage Thompson proudly donned a “Make America Great Again” hat:

Fans let Thompson hear it on social media.

“Hi I’m Tage Thompson of the @BuffaloSabres and I’m going to spend the next few months complaining that all you people made this political (while every player on every Canadian team breaks me in half) 🤷🏼‍♂️,” Keith Olbermann wrote.

“As a Sabres fan, I’m ashamed of this look. Tage isn’t exactly the sharpest guy either,” a user commented.

“If your going to wear that hat, it’s going to be a long, tough season…,” a fan wrote.

“Tage Thompson of the @BuffaloSabres has immediately and forever tarnished his Team USA goodwill by appearing in that State of the Union propaganda,” another said.

“Disgraceful. Despicable,” a user stated.

“He’s free to be MAGA, but he better understand there are circumstances and a lot of questions that need to be answered,” a fan commented.

Thompson’s Sabres return to the ice tonight against the New Jersey Devils at 7:00 p.m.

Tage Thompson Defends White House Visit

Thompson responded to the growing backlash for visiting the White House. Per The Athletic’s Matthew Fairburn, Thompson cited his patriotism and called it “an honor” to visit the White House.

During Tuesday’s State of the Union address, Trump also said that Team USA goalie Connor Hellebuyck would receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Florida Panthers star forward Matthew Tkachuk also let President Trump try on his gold medal. Whether the American players like it or not? Choosing to get political with a president as polarizing as Trump was always going to spark massive outrage.

And as Thompson has quickly learned, the players must deal with the growing criticism.
