Snoop Dogg’s tenure as a coach on The Voice appears to be coming to an end after Season 28 and the circumstances surrounding his departure have left fans both surprised and regretful. According to sources, NBC executives have reportedly held crisis talks with the 53-year-old rapper following backlash over controversial comments he made about same-sex couples in film.
The controversy began after Snoop shared on the It’s Giving podcast that he felt “scared to go to the movies” after taking his grandson to see Disney’s Lightyear, which features a lesbian couple. “They’re like, ‘She had a baby — with another woman.’ Well, my grandson… How does she have a baby?’” Snoop recounted. “The experience f**ked me up. I’m like, scared to go to the movies. Y’all throwing me in the middle of s— that I don’t have an answer for.”

The remarks sparked outrage over the weekend, with many labeling the rapper’s statements as homophobic. Behind the scenes, production sources say the comments caused serious concern at NBC. “This is the exact kind of conversation [the execs] didn’t want to be sucked into,” a source told The U.S. Sun. “Production had to remind him that he works for an inclusive, apolitical, family-friendly show. Comments like this create a divisive environment and make contestants and crew feel unsafe.”
Reports suggest that this incident may have solidified Snoop Dogg’s exit. “Comments like these are exactly why Snoop is already on the outs with the show,” the insider added. “He’s a liability for network TV.” The rapper’s political endorsements, including support for Donald Trump, are also said to have fueled controversy and amplified NBC’s concerns.

Snoop’s role on The Voice had already faced scrutiny. Sources noted that he hasn’t appeared as invested in the contestants this season as expected, and he remains one of the few coaches who has yet to win a season. “He was brought back this season per his contract but hasn’t been working out the way everyone hoped,” a production insider revealed.

Season 28 of The Voice is currently underway, featuring Snoop Dogg alongside Reba McEntire, Michael Bublé, and Niall Horan. With the show already in progress, fans are left wondering if this season could be their last opportunity to see the rapper mentor aspiring singers on the iconic series.

The network is already preparing for major changes in Season 29. Kelly Clarkson, Adam Levine, and John Legend are set to return as coaches for The Voice: Battle of Champions, premiering February 23, 2026. The upcoming season will introduce a host of new features, including a “Triple Turn Competition” during blind auditions, allowing coaches to earn a “Super Steal” for the battles round. Additionally, past artists and superfans will join a new voting block for the semi-finals and finale, giving viewers more direct influence over the competition.
While fans may mourn the potential loss of Snoop Dogg from the coaching panel, the show continues to evolve with innovative features and returning stars, ensuring The Voice remains a landmark platform for discovering musical talent.
