United States figure skating sensation Alyssa Liu captured the gold medal in Thursday’s final, achieving a feat that an American figure skater hadn’t done in 24 years.

Her 150.20 score in Thursday’s free skating portion of the event put her atop the leaderboard. Combined with a third-best 76.59 score in the short program, that gave Liu a 226.79 and the win.

Japan’s Kaori Sakamoto and Ami Nakai claimed the silver and bronze medals, with their scores of 224.90 and 219.16, respectively. Meanwhile, the USA’s Amber Glenn finished fifth overall with a score of 214.91 in the event.

Teammate Isabeau Levito finished 12th overall after Thursday’s competition. Liu received significant attention after her win.

Her performance brought forth plenty of appreciation and admiration for what she accomplished. An outpouring of messages offering her congratulations and celebrating her achievement came through, from various teammates and fellow Olympians.

Madison Chock was among those watching the events unfold and had several messages for Liu and Glenn after their latest Olympic event. She took to Instagram Stories to share three words about Liu’s win.

“She is everything,” Chock wrote with a yellow heart on a video of Liu’s final minute on the ice for the competition.

“What a moment,” Chock’s partner, Evan Bates, commented on the original Instagram post.

Another Chock IG Story slide showed photos of Liu and Glenn hugging as they celebrated and supported each other after the event’s results.

“So so proud of both of you,” Chock wrote to her fellow Olympians.

Liu claimed her second gold medal on Thursday. She previously competed alongside teammates Madison Chock, Evan Bates, Ilia Malinin, Danny O’Shea, and Ellie Kam in the team skating event.
