Travis Kelce and a Kansas City Chiefs teammate are taking heat over their decision to wear T-shirts calling for Rashee Rice to be freed following his six-game suspension.

Rice has been suspended for the first six games of the 2025 NFL season following charges for a hit-and-run accident he caused while racing up to speeds of 119 mph, injuring several people. He would flee the scene before the police arrived, refusing to assist the victims or stick around to see whether anyone died.

Fortunately, that did not turn out to be the case.

His suspension is indeed warranted, given the circumstances. It’s not as if he’s been canned for using marijuana or protesting; he really did get himself in some serious trouble and is lucky to have been punished in the manner he was.

Still, Kelce and wide receiver Tyquan Thornton were seen wearing warmup T-shirts featuring photos of Rice and the phrase “Free 4.”

Fans on social media were not happy to see the aforementioned Chiefs players wearing this sort of gear.

“Caused a car crash that could’ve killed multiple people and he himself *accepted* a 6 game suspension. What are we freeing?  This isn’t just some personal drug use or whatever,” someone commented.

“Free him from what? From attempted vehicular homicide? From hit & run? From fleeing the scene of an accident? Fleeing the scene of a crime? There’s so many possible crimes to pick from!” another offered.

“The… the guy who almost killed a bunch of people and fled the scene? And didn’t even go to prison?” a user asked.

The Chiefs went on to lose 20-17 to the Philadelphia Eagles, marking their third straight loss dating back to the Super Bowl. Fans, however, felt the refs had a hand in the defeat.

As for Rice, he pleaded guilty to a pair of felony charges and was sentenced to five years of probation and 30 days of jail time that can be served during said period.
