On the surface, Kansas City Chiefs All-Pro tight end Travis Kelce has as close to a “perfect life” as one might envision.

The millions of dollars, fame, three Super Bowl championships, and especially a blossoming relationship with the world’s biggest music star, Taylor Swift, which led to a wholesome engagement announcement on Aug. 26.

But as we all know, nobody has a “perfect life.” And as problem-free as things look for Travis Kelce right now, it hasn’t always been sunshine and rainbows for the 35-year-old and former Cincinnati Bearcats star. In fact, he was awfully close to sabotaging his football career in college long before emerging as a superstar in Kansas City.

Last month, Travis Kelce revealed that therapy helped him after he was suspended for the entire 2010 season following a failed Drนg test.

Speaking to the Daily Mail ahead of the Chiefs’ season opener against the Los Angeles Chargers, then-Bearcats assistant coach David Johnson revealed that he took Kelce under his wing after serving his season-long suspension:

“He had to communicate with me… he would let me know what he was doing and where he was. To make sure he didn’t stay out too late or do anything that wasn’t going to be good for him and for his future.”

The Daily Mail also mentioned a story where Travis’ brother and fellow Cincinnati product, Jason Kelce, delivered some tough love after catching him with a joint. The outlet says that Jason Kelce “threw the trash can lid at his brother before punching a hole in the wall,” with Travis finally getting the message.

“He definitely changed,” said Travis Kelce’s former Cincinnati teammate, Danny Milligan. “He definitely listened to his big brother a little more. He took advice and realized how scary a moment that was.”

Jason lobbied the Bearcats not to give up on his younger brother. They listened, and the rest is history.

2025 May Be Travis Kelce’s Final Season

The future Hall of Famer pondered retirement after the Chiefs’ 40-22 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl 59. But Kelce decided he wasn’t going out that way and chose to continue his pursuit of a fourth Super Bowl ring.

Kelce hasn’t outright stated that 2025 will be his last year, but the fact that he considered retirement after last season is certainly a telling sign. And if his production continues to regress, Kelce will likely decide it’s time to call it quits.

The Chiefs fell 27-21 in their season opener on Friday night, but it’s obviously too early to hit the panic button. Remember, they lost their season opener to the Detroit Lions in 2023 before winning the Super Bowl.
