It’s been a mixed start to the season for Chicago Sky star Angel Reese, who seems to be regressing in some key areas from last season. The team seems to have suffered for it as well, stumbling out the gate to an 0-4 start before getting their first wins against the Dallas Wings.
By far the biggest controversy Reese has faced this season is the widespread accusation that she lied about racist fan behavior in a road game against the Indiana Fever. It’s gotten so bad that even federal politicians are weighing in.
But for NBA icon Shaquille O’Neal, there are some concrete steps that Reese can take to improve in all areas of her life. In a recent interview with Sports Illustrated, Shaq advised Reese to focus more on bettering herself on the court rather than responding to other people’s comments on her behavior. He pointed out that he’s given her that advice several times before.
“[She’s] really a nice, beautiful young lady. But when you’re in this [sport] of ours, you have a play a certain way and you have to be a certain way,” Shaq said. “A lot of times, they, if they don’t understand who you are, they misconceive. But I tell her all the time, ‘Don’t worry about that.’
“She’s as good and even better than some of the people that y’all are kissing up to. But y’all don’t know it. But she knows it. And in order to be great, you have to know you’re great.”
“She just needs to continue to… play her game, better her game, and don’t worry about the nonsense. I tell her all the time: ‘Don’t be looking at those comments.’ Because they don’t really have a voice, they just think they.”

That might be easier said than done. Reese has built part of her brand on being confrontational and calling people out on her social media accounts and podcast.
But if it’s a battle between doing what will advance her WNBA career and not, Reese may have to take Shaq up on his advice – sooner or later.
