Reba McEntire broke down in tears as she spoke about her stepson, Brandon Blackstock’s, d3ath.

During an episode of The Voice, which aired on October 27, the 70-year-old cried after listening to Aubrey Nicole’s performance of Martina McBride’s “I’m Gonna Love You Through It.”

“I lost my oldest son because he did not win with cancer, so that was a real reminder that life goes on, and we sing songs about it so that we can remember the ones that we love so much and that we lean on at times like this,” Reba said.

In August, Reba’s stepson, Brandon Blackstock, died aged 48 after a battle with melanoma, a severe form of skin cancer. He had previously been married to Kelly Clarkson, with whom he shares two children. Brandon also has two other children from his earlier marriage to Melissa Ashworth.

As well as his four children, Brandon leaves behind his girlfriend, Brittney Jones, who previously worked as Kelly’s assistant.

Reba had known Brandon since he was four years old, after she began dating his dad, Narvel Blackstock. The pair parried in 1989, when Brandon was about “13,14.”

However, she and Narvel, 69, divorced in 1995; however, they share one son, Shelby, 35.

“My relationship with my stepson, Brandon Blackstock, was precious,” Reba told PEOPLE. “I absolutely loved that child.”

Adding, “Along with his mom and dad, I helped raise him, along with [Narvel’s other kids] Shawna and Chassidy.”

Reba said that she remembers the deceased music manager as the “funny” child who loved to “pull pranks” and “scare people.”

The musician said that Brandon’s favorite target was his dad’s management company, Starstruck Entertainment.

“We’d be at the office there at Starstruck in Nashville, and I’d be sitting at my desk, and I’d see Penny Chubb [a Starstruck Entertainment staffer] walk by going to the ladies’ room, and then here comes Brandon,” Reba said. “He’d hide behind the pillar.”

Continuing, she remarked how she misses her stepson, “Brandon is sorely missed, truly missed with his mischievousness and his love of life. He brought joy to everybody that met him, and we’ll never forget him.”

Reba also provided an update on how Brandon’s four children, Savannah, 23, Seth, 18, River, 11, and Remy, 9, are coping with the loss of their dad.

“The kids are doing well, they’re all bonding together and hanging out with each other, and taking it one day at a time,” The Voice judge told Entertainment Tonight a month after Brandon’s passing. “We know God’s got this.”
