Donnie Wahlberg's Blue Bloods Spinoff May Not Really Be About Danny Reagan

In the crowded landscape of 2000s network television, few shows could boast the staying power—or the devoted fanbase—of CBS’s “Blue Bloods.” Premiering in 2010, the Reagan family’s crime-fighting saga became a Friday night staple, racking up nearly 300 episodes across an astonishing 14-season run. But as 2023 drew to a close, fans received the news they’d long feared: CBS was pulling the plug on their beloved police procedural, marking the end of an era.

Yet, for viewers mourning the loss of their favorite New York City law enforcement clan, a glimmer of hope soon emerged. After months of speculation and swirling rumors, CBS made it official in February 2025: the Blue Bloods universe would live on. Enter “Boston Blue,” a brand-new spinoff granted a rare straight-to-series order—no pilot required—putting Donnie Wahlberg’s fan-favorite detective Danny Reagan front and center for a whole new chapter.

Produced by CBS Studios in partnership with Jerry Bruckheimer Television, “Boston Blue” promises to deliver all the grit and heart that made the original series must-see TV. But there’s still plenty of mystery in the air. Beyond Wahlberg’s return, the network has yet to reveal who will be joining the cast, leaving fans to wonder which familiar faces might pop up in Boston. And while whispers persist about Tom Selleck reprising his iconic role as Frank Reagan, the legendary actor appears to be riding off in a different direction—reportedly eyeing a Western collaboration with “Yellowstone” creator Taylor Sheridan.

Curiously, “Boston Blue” wasn’t always destined to be part of the Reagan family legacy. Insiders reveal that CBS and its creative team mulled over multiple spinoff ideas—including one that would have sent Danny Reagan down to Texas. Ultimately, the Boston-set drama, which started life as a standalone concept, was reimagined as the perfect vehicle for Wahlberg’s next act.

CBS Studios President David Stapf opened up about the process in July 2024, just as cameras were about to roll on the Blue Bloods series finale. “It’s a brand, a title, and a show that is beloved,” Stapf told Deadline. “We’ve got to get it right, so we’re taking our time and trying to figure out, okay, what is the next iteration of Blue Bloods? We have a whole season to go where we intend to celebrate it all season long as to how good that show is, so there’s still time for us to figure that out.”

For loyal viewers, that patience is paying off. “Boston Blue” is shaping up to be more than just a spinoff—it’s a thoughtful continuation, one that honors the Reagan legacy while forging bold new territory. As the curtain falls on one chapter and rises on another, fans can rest assured that Danny Reagan’s story is far from over. In fact, it may just be getting started.
