Donnie Wahlberg Says The Reagans Will Only Be A ‘Phone Call Away’ On ‘Boston Blue,’ Hints At Cameos
Donnie Wahlberg’s got the Reagan family on his mind ahead of shooting his Blue Bloods offshoot series, Boston Blue. The New Kids on the Block singer added to suspicion that Blue Bloods cast members will be making cameos on the show during a segment on Morning MAGIC with Sue and Kendra.
Donnie, 55, was asked to share a little bit about the exciting show opportunity that came his way and why he ultimately decided to say yes.
“Well CBS said, ‘Do you want to do a follow-up to Blue Bloods, like another show in the Blue Bloods universe?’ and I was like, ‘Hm maybe,’ and they were like, ‘Do you want to do it in Boston?’ and I was like, ‘Oh my god,’” he revealed about how the show idea came about.
“I can’t tell a lot of stuff about it other than at this point, I’m very humbled to be producing the show with Jerry Bruckheimer and some incredible writers and producers known as the Brandons, and it’s really an honor to keep the Blue Bloods tradition alive, and I think that’s what I’ll be doing with the show,” he added. “It will be a Danny Reagan-based show, but the Reagans are only a phone call away and Danny Reagan loves to use the phone, that’s all I’ll say.”
Plans for Boston Blue were first announced in February amid CBS’ list of show renewals. The network ended Blue Bloods with season 14 in December 2024. Donnie continuously hinted that the Reagan families stories were not yet over.
Given his latest update, we can probably assume that some Blue Bloods favorites will be joining Boston Blue for cameos and appearances.
Closer previously reported that Donnie has kept in contact with costar Tom Selleck after Blue Bloods ended.
“Over the decade they worked together they formed a very tight bond, they were a family,” an insider said in March. “That doesn’t just go away because the show is cancelled.”
“Tom still speaks to Donnie several times a week and the same with Bridget [Moynahan],” the source said. “They both respect him so much and love getting his advice on things and they’re also very protective of him, they worry.”
The source said that the Boston native was first to share the news of his new show with Tom, whom he worked with for 14 years.
“They know that working and being a part of the show gave him such a purpose, not to mention the paycheck, so they do fret about him being out of sorts now that it’s over. As soon as Donnie got news that he was getting a spinoff he called Tom, he was one of the first people he wanted to talk to,” the source shared. “He let him know there will be a place for him to do walk-ons and cameos if he so chooses, it’s really a case where the ball is in Tom’s court because Donnie is a loyal and true blue guy, having Tom come on is a given.”
