Nodar Kumaritashvili on a luger

A tragic situation changed the sport forever.

Nodar Kumaritashvili is a name most Olympians and Olympic fans will never forget. He once had dreams like everyone else, but his life was tragically cut short.

The Winter Olympic Games have seen tragic accidents that led to the deaths of athletes, with some horrific incidents captured on camera. Earlier this month,Β several skiers were killedΒ by avalanches in northern Italy while skiing.Β Some of the worst Winter Olympics deaths were watched by thousands, with one 21-year-old’s tragic death even caught on camera.

Amid the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy, fans are remembering a tragic accident that happened in 2010 at the Vancouver Olympics.

Luge, one of the world’s fastest and most dangerous sports, kicked off competition earlier this month at the 2026 Milan-Cortina Olympics. The nail-biting sport remains a Winter Olympics favorite, but its high speed and intense action can be treacherous.

Nodar Kumaritashvili, a promising Georgian luger, arrived at the Vancouver Olympics in 2010 with his sights set on gold. Tragically, he died before he had a chance to compete. He collided with a metal pole during his final training run on the day of the opening ceremony.

Jacques Rogge, president of the International Olympic Committee,Β statedΒ that the deathΒ β€œclearly casts a shadow over these games.”

The International Luge Federation conducted an investigation and determined that human error caused the deadly training run crash. There was no indication that track deficiencies caused the accident.

Because of Nodar Kumaritashvili’s death, the track was later redesigned with higher walls and padded beams. The change limits speeds to just about 87 miles per hour.

Before Kumaritashvili’s death, there was another Olympic luge tragedy. Weeks before the start of the 1964 Innsbruck Games, Polish-born British luger Kazimierz Kay-Skrzypeski died on the luge track during a practice run.

There has not been another death since Kumaritashvili.
