Patrick Mahomes has been encouraged to make a move that could possibly extend his career following his ACL injury.

The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback is done for the season after sustaining a torn ACL during a defeat to the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday. Not only have the Chiefs lost their starting QB, but the loss also condemned them to a postseason exile.

Mahomes had previously never failed to qualify for the playoffs. He has had a remarkable career in the pros so far. The 30-year-old has played 126 games, throwing for 35,939 yards and 267 touchdowns. He has also scored 19 TDs off scrambles.

The three-time Super Bowl winner has since undergone surgery to repair his ACL, doing so on Monday, an unusual timeline for athletes dealing with such an injury, following a heartbreaking reaction.

It’s believed that Mahomes’ decision to have surgery so early is because he intends to play in Week 1 next season.

“That was extreme, that was immediate, and that sent a message to me that Patrick Mahomes already is locked in on getting back for Opening Day 2026,” Shefter said on his ‘The Adam Schefter Podcast’ this week.

However, former NFL QB and current FOX analyst Robert Griffin III has advised him to sit out next season.

“Patrick Mahomes should sit out the 2026 season after tearing his ACL in December,” Griffin said. “But sources tell me he is determined to be ready by week 1 next year.”

Griffin definitely knows a thing or two about career-impacting injuries, having seen his own NFL spell derailed.

While Mahomes might consider RGIII’s advice, he is unlikely to heed it. He’s probably going to play as long as he gets cleared to.
