Andy Richter knows he made a lot of Dancing With the Stars fans mad with his presence on Season 34 of the show, which lasted as long as it did, and has left him stumped over the most recent elimination of Whitney Leavitt.

Richter made it through nine weeks of competition on the ABC show, despite consistently earning the lowest scores from the judges, something that irked some fans of the show who felt his fans were keeping him in at the expense of better dancers who were sent home before him.

Now, following the elimination of Leavitt and Mark Ballas, which surprised fans slammed as “ridiculous,” the 59-year-old comedian is speaking out.

Leavitt, 32, had been the top performer throughout the season and was at the top of the judges’ leaderboard before her surprise cut.

Acknowledging that he had stayed in longer than expected, Richter shared that he was dumbfounded that the next person to be eliminated was the star of Secret Lives of Mormon Wives.

“I think Whitney is going home, to me it’s absolutely insane,” he told Entertainment Weekly. “I mean, she’s an amazing dancer. And if all the sticklers who were furious about me still being in it, who were demanding perfect technical dancing, I don’t know why she would get sent home under that criterion.”

However, he also maintained that while complaints about talent were prevalent on the show, he also understood that there was more to it when it came to fan votes.

“There’s a whole soap opera going on adjacent to this show online,” he said. “It’s a good way to sort of take the temperature of what the audience is feeling in terms of voting. I’ve seen forever, there’s like people just like, ‘Whitney’s gotta go,’ and I’m just like, ‘What? Why?

His comments come after sources claimed that Leavitt felt her departure was directly related to the release of season 3 of Secret Lives of Mormon Wives just days before the semifinals, where she was painted in a negative light.

On the show, she was caught saying she had rejoined MomTok because it would give her a chance to be on Dancing With the Stars, and she felt that airing just days before the final elimination of the season was a slap in the face.

“She expressed on the set after the show last night, off camera, of course, that she feels that her being voted out was 100% a direct result of backlash from Mormon Wives,” a source told The Sun.

“Whitney feels really bitter that Hulu didn’t push the release of the show back a week.”
