Sophie Cunningham was born on August 16, 1996, in Columbia, Missouri, the United States. She showed great skills in sports, but she decided to choose basketball due to her physical strength.
Sophie Cunningham capped a standout college career at the University of Missouri, finishing as the program’s all-time leader in points (2,187) and free throws (537), while ranking second in three-point field goals (590) and fourth in points per game (17.0). The Columbia, Missouri native earned AP All-America Honorable Mention honors in her sophomore and junior seasons and was a three-time All-SEC First Team selection.

Following her senior campaign, Cunningham was named to the 2019 All-America Third Team. She then transitioned to the professional ranks, getting selected 13th overall by the Phoenix Mercury in the 2019 WNBA Draft – the highest pick for a former Missouri Tiger. Through her first three pro seasons, Cunningham has appeared in 53 games, making 11 starts, and averaging 3.8 points and 1.0 rebound per contest.
