Following the NBA’s decision to retire No. 6 across the league in 2022 as a tribute to the legendary Bill Russell, LeBron James had the right to wear the number since he had worn it previously. However, James chose to change his jersey number out of respect for Bill Russell, as stated by his agent. This move highlights a profound respect for the league’s history and its foundational players.
A Significant Journey Beyond Just A Number

Lebron James has always had a significant impact on his jersey numbers throughout his career. He started his NBA career in 2003 with the Cleveland Cavaliers, wearing No. 23 as a tribute to his childhood hero, Michael Jordan. He continued with the same number until he joined the Miami Heat in 2010. After moving to the Miami Heat and changing to 6, he explained the move as a representation of a new chapter and also a homage to Julius Erving, who was famous in No. 6.
After becoming a part of Cleveland in 2014, LeBron James returned to his 23 number jersey, which was significant for his fans and teammates. When James made his first move to the Lakers in 2018, he starred with the same 23 number, but later switched to No. 6 in 2021. During a conversation with ESPN in 2022, he emphasized that the change had personal significance. He also suggested that another change with his jersey number might take place in the future.
The earlier indication is making a significant impact now. LeBron’s return to 23 is more than just a matter of choices. This gesture is rooted in the NBA’s history. His big decision not to continue with number 6, even though he had the right to, demonstrated his deep respect for Bill Russell’s impact on and off the court. For a player like LeBron James, who is constantly aware of his historical significance and expectations, his jersey number is more than just his position on the court, reflecting the correction of the NBA’s history, present, and future.
