S.W.A.T. Spinoff Ordered to Series, With Shemar Moore Returning Alongside ‘New Generation of Characters’
S.W.A.T. may have concluded its run on CBS after eight seasons, but Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson’s story is far from over. Shemar Moore is set to reprise his role in a new spinoff series, S.W.A.T. EXILES, Sony Pictures Television announced on Sunday.
“After a high-profile mission goes sideways, [Hondo] is pulled out of forced retirement to lead a last-chance experimental SWAT unit made up of untested, unpredictable young recruits,” reads Sony’s official logline. “Hondo must bridge a generational divide, navigate clashing personalities, and turn a squad of outsiders into a team capable of protecting the city and saving the program that made him who he is.”
Production on the spinoff’s 10-episode first season is set to begin this summer in Los Angeles, with Jason Ning serving as showrunner. It’s not yet attached to a Stateside network or streaming service.
“My eight seasons on S.W.A.T. have been epic and memorable,” Moore says in a statement. “We entertained the world, defied the odds, came back from the dead twice, and continued to woo fans and families worldwide. I am excited for this next generation and iteration of S.W.A.T. with Sony. Katherine Pope, Neal H. Moritz, Jason Ning and I will keep the franchise, thrill ride action, heartfelt drama, and storytelling of S.W.A.T. alive. WE DON’T LOSE!!!! ROLL SWAT!!!”
“I couldn’t be more thrilled to partner with Sony to bring S.W.A.T. EXILES to life,” adds Ning. “It’s an incredible honor to carry forward the legacy of a show that fans around the world have come to love. Working with Shemar Moore, who defines what it means to be a leading man, and introducing a new generation of characters into this world is a dream.”
As any fan can attest, it’s been a wild couple of years for this franchise. CBS first cancelled S.W.A.T. in May 2023 after six seasons, only for the network to reverse that decision just a few days later. At the time, this was billed as S.W.A.T.‘s seventh and “final” season, but another surprise came in April 2024 when CBS announced that it was bringing S.W.A.T. back for Season 8.
S.W.A.T. aired its series finale (for real this time!) on Friday, May 16. “It will make you not want this show to end,” cast member Anna Enger Ritch told TVLine ahead of the episode’s airing. “You’ll want to keep watching what happens. There are so many avenues and directions to go, so many stories to tell, so many personal things. It will leave you wanting so much more.
