The Los Angeles Lakers are among the NBA teams that have been asked to surrender documents and other property following the arrests of a coach, player, and former player last month.
Portland Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups, Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier, and former Cleveland Cavaliers guard Damon Jones were all arrested as part of an FBI investigation into illegal sports betting and rigged poker games.
Jones, a known associate and former teammate of LeBron James who worked as a shooting coach with the four-time champion and had special access to the Lakers, is accused of passing on information regarding the player’s availability for gambling purposes.
According to a report from The Athletic, two other associates of James are under scrutiny, as the NBA has requested that Lakers assistant trainer Mike Mancias and executive administrator Randy Mims hand over their cell phones.

The report notes that Mancias and Mims are two of at least 10 Lakers employees whose cell phone and phone records, as well as other documents, have been handed over to the league. They are understood to have voluntarily handed over their devices and are cooperating with the investigation.
The NBA itself is under pressure from Congress following the aforementioned charges, with committees from the House and Senate asking why the league didn’t find credible evidence of players and coaches using privileged information to help gamblers win money on games.
“The NBA engaged an independent law firm to investigate the allegations in the indictment once it was made public,” an NBA spokesman told The Athletic in a statement. “As is standard in these kinds of investigations, a number of different individuals and organizations were asked to preserve documents and records. Everyone has been fully cooperative.”
James, Mancias, and Mims have not been charged with any crime, nor have they been named in any federal document. Mancias has been the player’s personal trainer for around 20 years, while Mims has been close to him since he was in high school.
They are both with the Lakers because of their affiliation with James.
