Kristen Welker traveled from NBC‘s Washington, D.C. studios, where she anchors Meet the Press full-time, to take over for Savannah at the news desk.
Craig addressed the change at the top of the show’s first hour, saying that Savannah was “enjoying some time off.”
While he didn’t reveal how long Savannah would be out of the studio, he hinted that it could be the entire week.
Craig told Kristen she could “take in some tennis” while she’s in town, since the US Open kicked off on Sunday at the nearby Arthur Ashe Stadium in Queens, New York.
Qualifying and Fan Week extend through August 29, followed by the tennis tournament’s first round on August 30.
The tournament concludes on September 13.
Kristen also shared an Instagram post, seemingly teasing she would be sticking around Studio 1A for a bit.
“So wonderful to join the @todayshow crew and @craigmelvin while @savannahguthrie takes a much-deserved break.
“Looking forward to seeing everyone bright and early tomorrow!” the journalist wrote alongside a photo of herself with Craig, Dylan Dreyer, and Carson Daly on the Today Plaza.
Savannah has yet to reveal her whereabouts on social media or how long she’ll be away.
The TV star has taken multiple breaks in recent weeks for her new NBC game show, Wordle, which she hosts.
She jetted off to the West Coast in mid-July for filming and was gone for several weeks.

The U.S. Sun obtained photos of the mother of two trekking through LaGuardia Airport with her husband, Michael Feldman, who joined her on the trip.
Earlier this year, Savannah took a months-long break from the show to focus on the search for her elderly mother Nancy, who had suddenly disappeared.
The 84-year-old was suspected of being abducted in the middle of the night at her Tucson, Arizona, home on February 1 and hasn’t been seen since.
Multiple ransom notes sent to news outlets and the Pima County Sheriff’s Office have since been unearthed, but there are still no leads on her whereabouts.
In the latest notes, the alleged captors apologized and claimed that Nancy died of natural causes.
Savannah’s mother was reportedly on life-saving medication that she couldn’t go without.
Earlier this month, Savannah shared an emotional message on Instagram, pleading for someone to come forward about the ransom notes.
The investigation is ongoing and, so far, no arrests have been made.
