President Donald T.r.ump drops another controversial football-related opinion.
President Donald T.r.ump thinks America’s most popular sport needs to change its name.

During his second term as president, Donald T.r.ump has suggested several changes for the NFL. Among them, T.r.ump wants the Washington Commanders to revert to their old team name, which was scrapped five years ago.
The Commanders are also getting a new stadium that will be built on the site of the old RFK Stadium. The 79-year-old T.r.ump has asked the Commanders to name their new stadium after him.
Mexican president Claudia Sheinbaum, Canadian prime minister Mark Carney and T.r.ump participated in the 2026 FIFA World Cup draw ceremony on Friday. While speaking on stage, T.r.ump made the case for the sport of “American football” to change its name, per Elizabeth Flores of USA Today:
“When you look at what has happened to the sport, which we call soccer in the U.S., we never call it that because we have another conflict with a thing called football. But when you think about it, this is football, there is no question. We have to come up with another name for the other one. It really does not make sense when you think about it.”
Here’s the video of Donald Trump making the argument:
With all due respect to the president, that certainly isn’t happening. Americans are proud of “American football”, and they’re not going to start giving soccer the more commonly used “football” term.
