The Detroit Lions’ offense could look very different in 2026.

The Detroit Lions prepare for a 2026 season in which they will have to prove that they are contenders again. Following a disappointing 2025 campaign (9-8, third in the NFC North), the Lions will see multiple players leave, and not because of Amon-Ra St. Brown’s trolling. They must regroup to try to challenge the Seattle Seahawks for the NFC throne.

Following the shocking retirement of offensive tackle Dan Skipper, the Lions might be bracing to see one of their best player walk away. The Lions have had arguably the best running back duo in the NFL for the past three seasons.

Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery have terrorized opposing defenses under Dan Campbell. However, as great as the partnership is, it seems that their time together has come to an end.

David Montgomery Could Leave Detroit Lions As Jahmyr Gibbs Is Up For A Contract Extension

After signing Montgomery to a two-year, $18.25 million extension in 2024, the Detroit Lions may be on the verge of cutting the veteran running back. They could save $6 million and $9 million, respectively, in the next two years if they cut Montgomery with a post-June 1 designation.

“David Montgomery was effective in his role and the savings aren’t huge,” Alex Ballentine of Bleacher Report wrote Friday. “Yet, his role took another step back to Jahmyr Gibbs. Montgomery had a career-low 158 carries despite playing in 17 games for the first time in his career.”

Dan Graziano of ESPN believes Gibbs would secure a four-year, $80 million extension with the Lions. This would force the team to invest less in other positions around the star running back. Gibbs separated himself from Montgomery in 2025. He carried the ball 243 times for 1,233 yards and 13 touchdowns.
