The Kansas City Chiefs walked away from the Detroit Lions game with a 30-17 win, but the actions of Brian Branch overshadowed the victory.

JuJu Smith-Schuster and Brian Branch had been exchanging hits throughout the game, and tensions finally boiled over after the final whistle.

While celebrating the victory on the field, cameras caught the Detroit Lions safety slowly walking past Patrick Mahomes so he could confront the Chiefs’ wideout.

Smith-Schuster put out his hand before Branch struck him, sending Kansas City’s wideout to the ground. After collecting himself, he would get up and run back over to Branch to attack him back, but that only led to him being thrown to the ground by his facemask.

Branch spoke about the incident afterward.

“I did a real childish thing,” Brian Branch said, via The Athletic’s Colton Pouncy.

“I’m tired of people doing stuff in between plays, and refs don’t catch it. They be trying to bully me out there. I shouldn’t have did it, it was childish.”

Branch added that the altercation occurred because Smith-Schuster hit him in the back on a play late in the game. No flag was thrown.

“I got blocked in the back illegally,” Branch said.

“And it was in front of the ref, and the ref didn’t do anything. And just stuff like that. I could’ve got hurt off of that, but I still should not have done that.”

Brian Branch made a beeline toward JuJu Smith-Schuster in a calculated effort to get some payback.

The Lions’ safety did not like a block in the back that wasn’t called, so he struck the Chiefs’ wideout and then tossed him like a ragdoll on the field.

The blow set off a tense postgame scene as several players from both teams entered the incident before order was quickly restored.

Branch will undoubtedly face discipline as the NFL reviews the incident. His history does not help matters, as Branch has already been fined three times in 2025 after being fined seven times last season.
