LeBron James Reveals Unique $5.2 Million Plans If He Ever “Falls on Hard Times” [VIDEO]

LeBron James probably will not need to worry about paying the bills anytime soon, but the NBA superstar apparently has an unusual backup plan ready just in case everything somehow goes wrong.

During a conversation with Topps, James was shown one of the most valuable cards from his legendary rookie season. He initially appeared unsure how much the rare collectible had sold for, but his expression quickly changed when he heard the price.

The number was $5.2 million.

James then revealed that he may have one or two versions of the rare rookie card stored safely inside a vault. Rather than treating them only as pieces of basketball history, he joked that they could serve as emergency financial protection later in life.

“Just in case if I ever fall on hard times, then I’m good,” James said with a smile.

The moment was clearly lighthearted. James has earned an enormous amount of money during more than two decades in professional basketball, along with income from endorsements and other business ventures.

Still, his reaction showed that even he was impressed by what collectors are willing to pay for items connected to the beginning of his career.

The card discussed in the clip was a 2003-04 Upper Deck Exquisite Collection Rookie Patch Autograph parallel. Only 23 copies were produced, matching the jersey number James wore for much of his career.

It includes his autograph and a patch from a jersey worn during his rookie season. One example, graded 9 by Beckett with a perfect grade of 10 for the signature, was sold privately through PWCC Marketplace for $5.2 million in April 2021. At the time, the sale established a record for a basketball card.

James appeared surprised to learn that the sale had taken place several years earlier. He then joked that the cards in his vault might be worth even more now and suggested that he may need to take another look at them.

Whether his copies would command the same price would depend on several factors, including their condition, grading and which specific cards he owns. James did not provide those details during the conversation.

Even so, owning one or two examples from such a limited run would give him a valuable collection before anyone starts counting the rest of the memorabilia connected to his career.

The exchange also offered a glimpse of how athletes view collectibles featuring their own names and images.

To most fans, a rookie card is a reminder of a player’s first season or a piece of sports history worth displaying. For the athlete pictured on it, the experience is slightly stranger. James was essentially being told that a small piece of cardboard created when he was a teenager had become valuable enough to purchase several luxury homes.

His first NBA season came in 2003-04 after the Cleveland Cavaliers selected him with the first overall pick in the 2003 NBA Draft.

James entered the league carrying expectations rarely placed on a high school player. He immediately began living up to them, averaging 20.9 points, 5.9 assists and 5.5 rebounds while winning Rookie of the Year.

More than two decades later, cards from that season have become some of the most sought-after modern basketball collectibles.

The $5.2 million sale was not simply based on James being famous. The card combines several features collectors value: a rookie-year release, an autograph, a game-worn patch and an extremely limited production run.

It also represents the beginning of a career that eventually made James the NBA’s all-time leading scorer.

For James, keeping a few of those cards locked away now looks like a remarkably smart decision, whether he originally viewed them as investments or simply held onto them as souvenirs.

The resurfaced clip arrives as James prepares for another major change in his basketball career.

After eight seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers, he officially joined the Philadelphia 76ers in late July. James said the decision came after he seriously considered retirement and described it as his “last decision” as he prepares to begin a record-extending 24th NBA season.

The move gives James another opportunity to compete for a championship after winning titles with the Miami Heat, Cavaliers and Lakers.

He has described Philadelphia as one final challenge, believing he can help the 76ers compete for the championship that has eluded the franchise for decades.

The possibility of LeBron James genuinely falling on hard financial times remains extremely remote.

However, should that unlikely day ever arrive, he apparently will not need to search beneath the couch cushions.
