Fans see the smiles and the routines on game day. They rarely see the strict rules behind the scenes. Two cheerleaders, Megan Montiero and Lana Vogler, pulled back the curtain this week. They shared details about long hours, tough schedules, and firm appearance rules.

The 30-member squad traveled across the country to San Francisco for Super Bowl LX. The Patriots will face the Seattle Seahawks at Levi’s Stadium on Sunday. Before the first whistle blows, the cheerleaders will follow a very tight plan.

Early Mornings And Strict Standards For Super Bowl

Game day starts early for the cheerleaders. Very early. Montiero and Vogler told People they usually arrive at the stadium at least six hours before kickoff.

That means a 1 p.m. game requires a 7 a.m. arrival. Sunday’s 3:30 p.m. kickoff gives them a slightly easier morning with a 9:30 a.m. call time.

“Our practice starts right away,” Montiero said. “We run through everything from the little things we do on the sidelines to a halftime performance, just go through everything.”

The squad often shows up with hair and makeup already done. The team does not demand it, but most cheerleaders play it safe.

“Sometimes we’ll have an on-field practice before the game, and you never know how long that’s going to take,” Montiero said. “Most of us kind of do a good base of everything, so we can just do touchups.”

The team also has rules about appearance during the season. Cheerleaders must keep the same hair color and style they had during auditions. They are not allowed to make major changes, like switching from blonde to brunette.

The Patriots Cheerleaders also do their own hair and makeup. Vogler said this makes the group different from many other NFL teams.

“I feel like that’s kind of unique,” Vogler said. “It’s kind of fun that we all sit next to each other and we have a designated spot in the room that we sit at every single game all season.”

Even nails fall under team rules. Red and white colors get the green light. Team leaders ban blue nails completely.

Unlike some NFL teams, the Patriots organization lets cheerleaders interact with players. In reality, busy schedules limit those moments.

“We don’t really interact with them,” Vogler said. “Our practice schedule is on their off days.”

Time on the squad also comes with a limit. A cheerleader can stay only four years. Every member must re-audition each season. After four years, her time ends.

Former members can return as All-Stars to help when injuries happen. This year, two All-Stars will join the group at the Super Bowl.
