Former President Joe Biden is battling an “aggressive” form of prostate cancer, his office announced on Sunday.

“Last week, President Joe Biden was seen for a new finding of a prostate nodule after experiencing increasing urinary symptoms,” his personal office said in a statement.

“On Friday, he was diagnosed with prostate cancer, characterized by a Gleason score of 9 (Grade Group 5) with metastasis to the bone.”

While the diagnosis, which Biden received on May 16, indicates the former president has one of the worst forms of the disease, it “appears to be hormone-sensitive, which allows for effective management,” the spokesperson said in a statement.

Biden and his family are meeting with doctors and considering “multiple treatment options,” including hormone treatment.

Biden, who served as president from 2021 to 2025, abruptly ended his reelection bid in 2024. This came weeks after a halting performance during a debate against then-Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump.

In the meantime, President Trump has weighed in on the diagnosis.

Trump released a statement on Biden’s cancer diagnosis on Sunday evening on his social media platform, Truth Social.

“Melania and I are saddened to hear about Joe Biden’s recent medical diagnosis. We extend our warmest and best wishes to Jill and the family, and we wish Joe a fast and successful recovery,” he wrote on Truth Social.

Former President Joe Biden is battling an “aggressive” form of prostate cancer, his office announced on Sunday. They added that his condition is characterized by a “Gleason score of 9.”

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer and the second leading cause of cancer death among men in the U.S.

An estimated 35,770 deaths from prostate cancer will occur this year. Prostate cancer has a five-year relative survival rate.

Biden’s diagnosis of a Gleason score of 9 indicates his cancer is aggressive. A score of 9 indicates that the cancer cells are likely to grow and spread rapidly.

Despite the cancer’s apparent aggressiveness, its hormone-sensitive nature offers a treatment pathway
