After two decades on NCIS, Sean Murray isn’t sticking around just for nostalgia or a steady paycheck. The longtime fan-fave has made it clear: he’s only in as long as one key condition is met. For Murray, it’s all about the storytelling. If the show ever stops evolving or becomes a procedural snoozefest, he’s out.

No drama, no grand exit, just a quiet fade if the spark is gone. It’s a refreshingly honest take from a veteran star who knows when to walk away. And with NCIS still delivering, for now, Murray’s badge isn’t hanging up just yet.

Sean Murray will stick with NCIS but only on one condition

Sean Murray has one rule for sticking around NCIS: the work’s got to stay fresh. “If we weren’t doing that, I’d be bored. I wouldn’t want to do it,” he admitted during an interview with T&C. And after 22 seasons as Special Agent Timothy McGee, he’s earned the right to set some standards.

Murray didn’t start out as a mainstay. He popped in as a guest star during NCIS‘s first season and ended up becoming the show’s longest-running cast member. Now, as he wraps up season 22, he’s already looking ahead to season 23. He alluded,

I was looking at some of these photos and I’m just thinking about how much I’ve been there over two decades, and so there’s always an nostalgic aspect to everything and I’m really proud of us…

We’ve gone 22 years and the world of television has changed quite a bit and in some respects we’re a dinosaur, but we’re still got our fan base. We’re doing quite well!

Longevity like this doesn’t happen by accident. For Murray, it comes down to everyone on set still giving a damn. Even the behind-the-scenes stuff gets his nostalgia going. He jokes about those old trailers with ‘70s wood paneling and shag carpeting. Still, he barely spends time there.

And that makeup room? That’s where scenes get run, coffee kicks in, and lines get locked. For him, it’s more than just a job. So, as long as NCIS keeps raising the bar, expect McGee to stay in the game.

NCIS season 22 brings back Gibbs in the smartest, most heartfelt way

Season 22, Episode 19 brings back Leroy Jethro Gibbs in a clever, heartfelt way that hits right in the nostalgia. It’s all about his legacy and his rules. And Rule #45 – front and center. McGee, under pressure and sleep-deprived, leaves behind Gibbs’ iconic “clean up your own mess” note before going rogue to track down a mole inside NCIS.

It’s a callback that hits differently. Especially since McGee, played by Sean Murray, is now the show’s longest-serving agent and carrying that “OG” torch. The dream sequences, the accidental “Gibbs” slip, and the rule drop are all wrapped in emotion, legacy, and loyalty.

It’s a full-circle tribute to the bond between mentor and probie. And in true NCIS style, the team still shows up when it counts.
