The Cincinnati Bengals released a significant injury update on star quarterback Joe Burrow, which could alter the AFC playoff race.

Cincinnati was dealt a huge blow back in Week 2, when Joe Burrow suffered a turf toe injury that has sidelined him ever since. Initially, there was some doubt that Burrow would play again this season.

But in a pleasant surprise of an update, the Bengals announced that Burrow was a full participant in Wednesday’s practice, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

It remains to be seen if Burrow will actually play against the 9-2 Patriots, but it’s nonetheless an encouraging update for Bengals fans, who truly haven’t had much to celebrate this season.

Last month, the Bengals pulled off a blockbuster trade for Joe Flacco in a deal with the Cleveland Browns. Though Flacco has fared well with 12 touchdowns, three interceptions and a 290.6 passer rating (per Pro Football Reference), he was never going to replace the production that Joe Burrow brings.

A year ago, Burrow led the NFL with 4,918 passing yards and 43 touchdowns. If not for a horrific Bengals defense, the Bengals would have returned to the postseason last year.

If Joe Burrow Returns Against Patriots, The Bengals Suddenly Have Some Hope

The Bengals tend to start slowly but finish the season strong. So if Burrow were to return against New England on Sunday, the 3-7 Bengals would suddenly have some hope at making an improbable playoff run.

The Pittsburgh Steelers lead the AFC North with a 6-4 record, and the 6-4 Jacksonville Jaguars occupy the AFC’s last wild card spot. But the Bengals also have the head-to-head tiebreaker over Jacksonville, so it’d be foolish to count them out of the playoff race if Burrow got the clearance to return on Sunday.

Even i the Bengals don’t make the playoffs? You better believe they’ll be happy to wreak havoc in the AFC postseason race with the Buffalo Bills and Baltimore Ravens (two games) on their schedule.
