Oklahoma City Thunder Mascot and Victor Wembanyama

San Antonio Spurs superstar Victor Wembanyama had an amusing reaction when the Thunder mascot mocked the Spurs’ postgame celebration before the game started between both teams.

When we discuss NBA rivalries, the immediate teams that come to mind are the Los Angeles Lakers and the Boston Celtics. In all honesty, there’s not much rivalry between those two these days. Current ones, like the San Antonio Spurs and the Oklahoma City Thunder, bring much joy to fans. And we can all thank Victor Wembanyama for that.

We can all say that Wemby has a fairly obvious personal grudge against Chet Holmgren. The two haven’t spoken much, as Holmgren suggests. Add to the fact that both of these teams are young, then fans are in for a treat for their inevitable playoff battles in the very near future.

Now, their rivalry has reached petty levels. The Thunder mascot deliberately mocked the Spurs’ post-game celebration before tip-off, and Victor Wembanyama’s reaction silently speaks a thousand words.

The Oklahoma City Thunder finally won a game against the San Antonio Spurs after four tries this season. They won handily tonight over the Spurs, 119-98. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander had a standout game, scoring 34 points. Jalen Williams chipped in with 20 markers.

The Spurs were paced by Stephon Castle’s 20 points. Wembanyama had a quiet night, scoring 17 points in the loss.

Victor Wembanyama’s True Rival

While it’s fun to think that Wemby has a personal rivalry with Chet, both aren’t in the same tier as players. Victor Wembanyama is widely perceived as the future face of the NBA. As for Holmgren, while no doubt he’s a future all-star, he’s not going to reach his rival’s heights.

Curiously, former NBA player Lou Williams suggests that it is Shai Gilgeous-Alexander who is the true rival of Wembanyama. “Why would an MVP candidate have a rivalry with a guy who’s not in that conversation?” Williams said. “There’s levels to this. The real rivalry is gonna be SGA and Wemby.”

That’s an intriguing take from Lou Will.
