It seems there is one member of the Blue Bloods cast in particular Donnie Wahlberg is working to have join the cast of CBS’s new spinoff, Boston Blue
CBS is currently hard at work adding the key players to the cast of Boston Blue, but the cast of its Blue Bloods spinoff is coming together nicely. So far, CBS has announced the casting of Sonequa Martin-Green, Ernie Hudson, and Maggie Lawson in the Donnie Wahlberg-led spinoff, with additional casting announcements still expected to come.
As casting continues, fans have been eager to see if any additional members of the original Blue Bloods cast land a role in the spinoff. Ironically, it seems fans aren’t the only ones hoping to see some familiar faces back. Wahlberg himself is reportedly pushing for the creative team to find a way to bring back one particular member of the show’s original cast: Tom Selleck.
“Donnie is an old-school loyal guy, he’s going to fight for Tom to get a piece of the action. He and Tom are still very close, they talk all the time and Donnie is well aware that Tom was not happy about Blue Bloods getting canceled. Tom isn’t leaning on him or demanding anything of him, he’s got a movie in the works and is way too proud to beg. But Donnie wants to do this for him, not only because it’s the right thing to do, but also because he loves working with Tom,” an insider revealed to Closer.
Honestly, Wahlberg fighting to get Selleck involved with Boston Blue makes complete sense. Wahlberg has always been a major fan of his on-screen father, praising Selleck over the years for his work ethic and leadership on the show. In fact, he penned an emotional tribute to Selleck on the day of the series finale back in December thanking him for leading the way and the lasting friendship they built over the years.
“Fourteen years of calling this man my cast mate, my commissioner, my friend and — whether it was on screen or off — calling him DAD! It’s been an honor, my dear friend. Thank you for leading the way and for always trusting in me. Thank you for being a father figure and a leader to all of us on the set of Blue Bloods. Our tour has ended, but the friendship, admiration, respect, and memories will remain.”

Selleck was indeed the heart of Blue Bloods as New York City Police Commissioner Frank Reagan, and he put up quite a fight in trying to get CBS to reverse its decision to end the show. With how hard he fought to save the show, it seems likely Selleck would be open to reprising his role in Boston Blue and the hope seems to be to find a way to make him a part of the spinoff – even if not in a regular role.
“They both got emotional filming their last dinner scene on Blue Bloods because it was the last, but now that this series is happening, they may get to do another,” a second source told Closer. “It’s set in Boston, so it won’t be a regular family dinner thing like on the last show, but there’s the potential, and Tom would be all for doing it.”
Given that Frank is still the NYPD Commissioner, it would make sense that Frank wouldn’t be appearing in every episode, but we’d love to see him recur on the show and pop up from time to time. Getting to see Frank drop in for some visits in Boston, or even getting to see Frank back via Danny coming back home to New York to visit him, would be amazing. We’d even settle for split-screen-style scenes in which Danny and Frank catch up over the phone or via Zoom. This could help keep the spirit of Blue Bloods alive on the show and give fans a chance to see more of the Reagan family members they’ve come to know and love.
We’d also like to hope that Selleck won’t be the only former Blue Bloods costar to pop up on the show. What made Blue Bloods special was its family dynamics, and we’d love to see additional members of the Reagan family drop in from time to time on Boston Blue.
