A-List Star Matthew Goode ‘Desperate’ for Season 2 of Netflix’s ‘Exceptional’ Crime Thriller Dept Q — Fans Are Hooked on This Dark, Gripping Mystery
Netflix viewers have fallen hard for Dept Q, the new crime thriller starring Matthew Goode (Downton Abbey, Call The Midwife). Based on the bestselling book series by Jussi Adler-Olsen, the show follows Carl Morck, a Scottish detective whose life is forever changed after a brutal attack leaves his partner paralyzed and another officer dead.
A Detective Haunted by the Past
Returning to work after his injury, Carl (Goode) is assigned a chilling cold case: the disappearance of Merritt Weaver, a human rights lawyer missing for years and presumed dead. Alongside his loyal assistant Akram (Alexej Manvelov) and the troubled yet determined officer Rose (Leah Byrne), Carl digs deeper — uncovering dark secrets that threaten to unravel everything he thought he knew.
The first season’s nine episodes captivated fans with its tense atmosphere, emotional depth, and a dual mystery that kept viewers on edge until Merritt’s fate was revealed. Yet, while the cold case concluded, the mystery behind the attack on the police remains unsolved — leaving audiences craving more.

Matthew Goode’s Passion for Season 2
Matthew Goode has openly expressed his enthusiasm for a second season, telling Deadline:
“I’m desperate to do a second season because this is such a wonderful company of actors. I’d wanted to work with Shirley Henderson for years. And Kelly Macdonald, and then Leah Byrne, who is a revelation.”
He praises the cast’s chemistry and the mix of dark, exciting, and sometimes hilarious storylines. Goode also shared his hopes for further character development, saying:
“I’d like to have a character I can come back to — someone with complex, dark, and hopefully funny things happening. How will Carl change? Even small changes matter.”
Show creator Scott Frank echoed this sentiment, revealing his eagerness to continue adapting Jussi Adler-Olsen’s novels, with the next book promising to be “even more interesting and relevant.”

What’s Next for Dept Q?
With no official confirmation yet, fans and cast alike remain hopeful that Carl Morck’s story will continue. The rich source material and powerful performances have positioned Dept Q as one of Netflix’s most compelling crime dramas of 2025.
