Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr has never been shy about his political leanings since taking the job in 2014, and those opinions have extended to his takes on the current president.

Kerr has been an outspoken Democrat and left-leaning supporter, and he took a side in a recent political debate. After the Warriors’ win over the Memphis Grizzlies this week, Kerr called out the President for his lack of support for top universities in the country.

“It’s crucial for all of our institutions to be able to handle their own business the way they want to,” Kerr said while wearing a Harvard Basketball shirt.

Trump ordered a federal freeze on $2.2 billion in funding for Harvard this week due to the school’s refusal to adhere to his standards on admissions and curriculum.

“They should not be shaken down and told what to teach, what to say by our government. Way to go, way to stand up to the bully.”

Fans are reacting to Kerr’s gesture on social media.

“This is one of the reasons I love the warriors. Kerr has always been vocal about this type of stuff and I love him for it,” one fan said.

“Steve Kerr, son of a university professor, standing for academic freedom in his country. The professors can never be the enemy in a democracy,” said another fan.

“I agree with Steve Kerr, they should be able to conduct in America how they want AND FOOT THE BILL FOR THEIR EXISTENCE,” said one fan, offering a different opinion.

“Accept federal money, accept federal guidelines/laws. It doesn’t take a genius to figure this out,” another fan added.

“Reason # 162,679 of why I don’t watch the NBA. Head Coaches are social justice warriors,” one fan said.

“They are allowed to handle their own business. If their own business is continuing to discriminate based on race they’re free to do so, they just won’t get federal funds and won’t be tax exempt,” another fan said.

Kerr will likely continue to be outspoken about his political opinions, especially after speaking in person at the Democratic National Convention last year in support of former vice president Kamala Harris.
