A social media detective uncovered one of Aaron Rodgers’ tweets from 2013, and the timing couldn’t have been better.
After a disastrous 2024 season, the Jets released Rodgers and star wide receiver Davante Adams. After hiring new head coach Aaron Glenn, the Jets decided to restart at quarterback by signing Justin Fields to a two-year deal worth $40 million.
During Thursday’s appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show,” Aaron Rodgers explained how the Jets broke the news that they were moving on from him. Rodgers said it was a short meeting and didn’t comprehend why the Jets had him fly out to meet in person when they could have given him their decision over the phone:
“I’ve flown across the country and, 20 seconds in, he (Glenn) goes…’So, do you want to play football?’ And I was like, ‘Yeah, I’m interested.’ And he said, ‘We’re going in a different direction at quarterback.’
“I was kind of shocked. Now I’m not shocked because I didn’t think that was a possibility. Listen, of course, if they want to move on, that’s totally fine, but shocked because I just flew across country. You could have told me this on the phone if we weren’t even going to have a conversation.”
Jets fan and X/Twitter user @NYJ_Matt did some good old-fashioned social media detective work and uncovered a 12-year-old tweet from Aaron Rodgers. On Apr. 14, 2013, Rodgers wrote, “Meeting in person > phone call. Always”.
We’ll go ahead and guess that Rodgers’ mind has changed on the whole “meeting in person” is “always” better than phone calls. On this occasion he brought up with the Jets, a phone call certainly would have been better.
In his lone full season with the Jets, the 10-time Pro Bowler completed 63.0 percent of pass attempts for 3,897 yards, 28 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.

Rodgers has met with the Pittsburgh Steelers, and both head coach Mike Tomlin and owner Art Rooney II have expressed optimism that they’ll get a deal done. Speaking on McAfee’s show, however, Rodgers didn’t offer a specific timeline on his decision.
The Steelers’ top quarterback right now is career backup Mason Rudolph, so it appears they’re more than happy to play the waiting game until Rodgers makes a final call
