The Virgin Suicides, Sofia Coppola’s dreamy 1999 adaptation of Jeffrey Eugenides’ novel, is timeless. The Lisbon sisters feel similarly stuck in time, with their mysterious deaths lingering in the memories of the boys captivated by them.

Following five girls in mid-1970s suburbia, presided over by an overprotective mother and meek father, the film presents its tragedies — and the sisters themselves — as hazy and elusive. We watch in quiet horror as they kill themselves one by one. But why?

Even with 25 years to chew on that question, there is no answer. Instead, viewers are still left with haunted speculation after all this time.

Many of the main actors have been similarly elusive since appearing in the movie, while others have gone on to prominent Hollywood careers. Here’s where the cast of The Virgin Suicides is now, a quarter-century after the film’s premiere.

Kirsten Dunst (Lux Lisbon)

Kirsten Dunst brings her distinctive vibes to Lux, the rebellious Lisbon sister whose disobedience winds up being a tragic tipping point.

Dunst was just 16 when she joined the film’s cast, but anyone who’d seen her Golden Globe-nominated work as young Claudia in Neil Jordan’s Interview With the Vampire (1994) was unsurprised at the maturity of her performance. Her child stardom grew with Little Women (1994) and Jumanji (1995), but her career truly took off with Suicides and the satirical comedies Drop Dead Gorgeous (1999) and Dick (1999).

She went on to become Mary Jane in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man (2002–2007) films while landing a crucial role in Michel Gondry’s surrealist masterpiece Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004). In addition to re-teaming with Coppola for Marie Antoinette (2006) and The Beguiled (2017), she starred in Melancholia (2011) and Jane Campion’s The Power of the Dog (2021), earning her first Oscar nomination for the latter.

The actress has also dipped her toes in television, starring in the season 2 ensemble of Fargo (2015) and the con comedy On Becoming a God in Central Florida (2019). Most recently, she was back on the silver screen for a lead role in Alex Garland’s Civil War (2024).

Dunst began dating her Fargo costar Jesse Plemons in 2016. They wed in 2022 and have welcomed two sons to their family.

Kathleen Turner (Mrs. Lisbon)

Kathleen Turner, an actress with an iconic husky voice, plays way against type as the peculiar Mrs. Lisbon.

Turner rose to fame as a cunning-beyond-her-years femme fatale in the erotic thriller Body Heat (1981). She eventually carved out a comedy niche, particularly with Romancing the Stone (1984), Prizzi’s Honor (1985), and Peggy Sue Got Married (1986) — the latter, of course, directed by Sofia Coppola’s father, Francis Ford. In addition to the diabolical The War of the Roses (1989) and John Waters’s cult classic Serial Mom (1994), she gave voice to Jessica Rabbit in Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988).

A long struggle with rheumatoid arthritis took almost a decade to get under control, which affected her health as well as her career.

The actress has since returned to the stage, becoming a staple on Broadway and London’s West End, including a highly regarded run in Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf that landed her a Tony nomination. She also reunited with frequent costar Michael Douglas on his Netflix series The Kominsky Method (2019–2021).

Turner has one daughter — Rachel, born in 1987 — with ex-husband Jay Weiss.

James Woods (Mr. Lisbon)

As mild-mannered schoolteacher Mr. Lisbon, James Woods plays a quiet counterpoint to his domineering wife.

That couldn’t be more different from his typical screen persona. He’s made a career of playing hard-nosed heroes, wiseguys, and dirtbags. His early classics, like David Cronenberg’s Videodrome (1983) and Sergio Leone’s Once Upon a Time in America (1984), paved the way for his Oscar-nominated work in Salvador (1986) and Ghosts of Mississippi (1996).

Woods was a quintessential “guy you love to hate” in Martin Scorsese’s Casino (1995), portrayed H.R. Haldeman in Nixon (1995), and hunted the dead in John Carpenter’s Vampires (1998). The charismatically abrasive character actor lent his voice to Disney as Hades in Hercules (1997), found a short-term gig on Ray Donovan (2013), and appeared in White House Down (2013).

Josh Hartnett (Trip Fontaine)

As one of the signature heartthrobs of the ’90s, Josh Hartnett was well-cast as ladykiller Trip Fontaine. It’s his abandoning of Lux after homecoming that leads to her missing curfew, inadvertently setting in motion the tragedies promised by the title.

The young actor was a teen-flick staple thanks to Halloween H20 (1998) and The Faculty (1998). From there, he grew into war epics Pearl Harbor (2001) and Black Hawk Down (2001). Despite modest hits like 40 Days and 40 Nights (2002) and Hollywood Homicide (2003), Hartnett largely backed away from the spotlight for a time.

He leapt back on the radar thanks to Showtime’s fantastical hit Penny Dreadful (2014–2016), and his career is currently on a solid upswing. He’s delivered some solid work in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer (2023) and M. Night Shyamalan’s surprise hit thriller Trap (2024), where he turned to the dark side as a serial killer trying to escape a concert with his daughter.

In 2021, Hartnett secretly married his longtime partner, English actress Tamsin Egerton, with whom he has four children.

A.J. Cook (Mary Lisbon)

A.J. Cook was the second-oldest sister, Mary Lisbon, a lesser-seen character among the group, but one with a sharp tongue whenever she was free of her mother’s grip.

After a string of movie roles, Cook found long-term stability on the small screen in the hit procedural Criminal Minds (2005–present). She’s been playing special agent and profiler Jennifer Jareau (a.k.a. JJ) for the better part of her career — 323 episodes and counting. Her other notable projects include Final Destination 2 (2003) and the 2013 horror film Wer.

Cook married Nathan Andersen in 2001. Their two sons have appeared in recurring roles on Criminal Minds as Jareau’s children.

Scott Glenn (Father Moody)

Scott Glenn has been a staple of American thrillers since the 1970s, appearing in everything from The Silence of the Lambs (1991) to westerns like Silverado (1985). Like so many established actors in The Virgin Suicides, he plays against type as the kindly, concerned Father Moody, who attempts to loosen the chokehold Mrs. Lisbon keeps on her daughters by encouraging them to socialize with boys.

Glenn’s silver-screen legacy includes small parts in genuine classics like Nashville (1975) and Apocalypse Now (1979) to major roles in The Right Stuff (1983), The Hunt for Red October (1990), and The Bourne Ultimatum (2007). In recent years, he’s graced the small screen with his commanding presence in The Leftovers (2014–2017), Daredevil (2015–2016), Castle Rock (2018), and most recently The White Lotus season 3 (2025).

The ex-Marine has been married to Carol Schwartz since 1968. They share two daughters.

Danny DeVito (Dr. Horniker)

Comedy master Danny DeVito brings rare comic relief to The Virgin Suicides as bumbling Dr. Horniker, who’s at a complete loss when it comes to understanding the psyche of a teenage girl.

DeVito’s career has been one success after another, from Louie on classic sitcom Taxi (1978–1983) to rich basketcase Frank Reynolds on classic sitcom It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia (2006–present).

He’s one of the most ubiquitous character actors of his generation, but he also sinks his teeth into above-the-marquee roles. He was, after all, the Penguin in Batman Returns (1992) and sidekick to none other than Arnold Schwarzenegger in Twins (1988) and Junior (1994).

The list could go on: Get Shorty (1995), L.A. Confidential (1997), The Rainmaker (1997). And he’s quite a director too, having helmed The War of the Roses (1989), Matilda (1996), and Death to Smoochy (2002), among others. In 2017, he earned a Tony nomination for his Broadway debut in Arthur Miller’s The Price.

DeVito married fellow actor Rhea Perlman in 1982 after over a decade together. The two separated in 2012 and again in 2017 following a reconciliation, but remain close. They share three children.

Hanna Hall (Cecilia Lisbon)

In a turn that remains shocking to this day, Hanna Hall brings incredible depth to young Cecilia Lisbon, who flings herself from her upstairs window and gets impaled on the fence below.

Most audiences may best recognize Hall as young Jenny in Forrest Gump (1994), but she’s booked several other prominent roles, including Michael Myers’ sister Judith in Rob Zombie’s Halloween remake. She also guest-starred on Masters of Sex (2015) and The Purge (2019).

The Colorado native has transitioned away from acting and now works as an intimacy coordinator. Her credits include Kinds of Kindness (2024) and Lisa Frankenstein (2024).

Leslie Hayman (Therese Lisbon)

The eldest daughter, Therese — played with subtle angst by Leslie Hayman — has a distinct sadness that only hints at the things she’s seen and endured.

Behind the scenes, Hayman is as enigmatic as her onscreen avatar. Her own sister, Stephanie, is one of Coppola’s close friends dating back to childhood. Not only that, but Coppola used Leslie as her model for what the Lisbon sisters should look like. No wonder she wound up in the film.

Her only other movie credit was as a set dresser for Coppola’s short film, Lick the Star (1998). Hayman’s last public appearance was in an ad campaign for the Milk Fed clothing line, which Sofia and Stephanie launched together.

Chelse Swain (Bonnie Lisbon)

As the middle sister lost in the mix, Chelse Swain plays Bonnie Lisbon as a girl adrift who never finds her way back.

In real life, Swain is the younger sister of ’90s “it girl” Dominique Swain, whose controversial turn as the title character in Lolita (1997) continues to spark discussions about the novel and its film adaptation. The two Swains starred together in the coming-of-age indie Tart (2001).

The Virgin Suicides was Chelse’s acting debut, and she followed it with appearances in Georgia Rule (2007), alongside Jane Fonda and Lindsay Lohan, and guest spots on Judging Amy (2002) and The Shield (2008). She has not appeared on screen since 2012.

Jonathan Tucker (Tim Weiner)

As much as this film is about the Lisbon sisters, it’s easy to forget that much of the story is told from the perspective of local boys who are fascinated by the girls. Jonathan Tucker’s Tim Weiner is one of the crew preoccupied with the Lisbons.

The film came on the heels of his performance as a young Billy Crudup in the star-studded Sleepers (1996). In the years since The Virgin Suicides, Tucker has been a staple in genre films like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003) and The Ruins (2008), while maintaining a prolific TV career on the likes of Parenthood (2011–2013) and Westworld (2018–2022). Most recently, he appeared in the thriller God Is a Bullet (2023), alongside Maika Monroe and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau.

Tucker has been married to Tara Ahamed since 2012. They have twins, a son and a daughter.

Hayden Christensen (Jake Hill Conley)

When The Virgin Suicides arrived, Hayden Christensen’s Jake was just another boy indiscriminately in love with the Lisbon sisters.

In a matter of three years, Christensen would be known the world over as Anakin Skywalker, a.k.a. Darth Vader, in Attack of the Clones (2002) and Revenge of the Sith (2005).

While Anakin made him a household name, the actor earned greater acclaim for his dramatic turns in Life as a House (2001) and Shattered Glass (2003). He fell largely into obscurity in subsequent years, but has recently returned as Vader in the Disney+ shows Obi-Wan Kenobi (2022) and Ahsoka (2023).

Christensen was in a relationship with his Jumper costar Rachel Bilson from 2007 to 2017, and they have a daughter.
