Nobody expected a jeans ad to ignite a national debate involving the White House, TikTok crusaders, and Stephen Colbert. But here we are. Sydney Sweeney’s American Eagle campaign didn’t just go viral. It exploded into a full-on culture war.

The clip that created all these features Sweeney saying, “Genes are passed down from parents to offspring… My jeans are blue.” It was meant to be cheeky. Instead, it triggered a full-blown internet freakout, with critics accusing the ad of everything worse anyone can think of. Tough time for denims, it seems.

American Eagle Speaks Up, Finally

New Report Reveals Real Reason Sydney Sweeney Went to Jeff Bezos' Wedding After Being Spotted With Tom BradySydney Sweeney (Photo Via Instagram/@sydney_sweeney)
After days of heated takes and viral TikToks, American Eagle finally addressed the controversy on Friday. In an Instagram post, the brand wrote, “Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans is and always was about the jeans. Her jeans. Her story. We’ll continue to celebrate how everyone wears their AE jeans with confidence, their way. Great jeans look good on everyone.”

But that hasn’t stopped the online noise. One TikTok creator with just 400 followers posted a video calling the campaign “one of the loudest and most obvious racialized dog whistles we’ve seen,” a post that quickly racked up over 1.4 million views. Critics pointed to Sweeney’s blonde hair and blue eyes, alleging the line played into eugenics-adjacent messaging, despite AE’s long history of inclusive advertising and its Jewish CEO.

Sydney Sweeney, for her part, has stayed completely silent. No comment or apology. Just business as usual. And business, for her, is booming. She’s juggling major movie roles, high-profile endorsements, and even a lingerie line reportedly backed by Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez.

Controversial or not, the American Eagle campaign got people talking, and buying. And maybe that’s all the brand ever wanted.

Meanwhile, Baskin-Robbins, another Sweeney brand partner, has shut down comments on TikTok posts featuring the actress. That might say more than any press release ever could.
