The Denver Nuggets made a shocking head coaching move on Tuesday afternoon.

ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania is reporting that the Denver Nuggets have fired championship-winning head coach Mike Malone on Tuesday afternoon.

Malone, 53, has been the team’s head coach since 2015.

“BREAKING: The Denver Nuggets have fired coach Michael Malone, sources tell ESPN,” Charania reported.

The Nuggets are two years removed from winning the NBA Finals. However, they have struggled during the 2024-25 season. The Western Conference franchise chose to make a shocking move on Tuesday, ahead of the NBA Playoffs.

Charania reports that the NBA Finals-winning head coach was let go in a meeting on Tuesday.

“Days before the NBA playoffs, the Nuggets dismissed Malone in a meeting today. Malone is the winningest coach in franchise history since being hired in 2015 – and led the Nuggets to the 2023 NBA championship,” he reported.

The Nuggets are reportedly promoting longtime NBA coach David Adelman to the interim head coaching role, according to insider Marc Stein.

The Denver Nuggets are 47-32 on the 2024-25 season, though the team has lost four straight games. Denver is scheduled to take on the Sacramento Kings on Wednesday evening. Tipoff for that one is scheduled for 10 p.m. E.T. on ESPN.

Denver has yet to officially announce its head coaching decision.
