It’s no spoiler to say that in Paramount+’s upcoming NCIS: Tony & Ziva spinoff, things can get steamy between the titular, on-again/off-again couple.
In the international spinoff that reunites NCIS vets Michael Weatherly and Cote de Pablo on-screen for the first time since October 2013, Tony and Ziva have been raising tweenage Tali (played by The Outlaws’ Isla Gie), together, in Paris — though apparently not together together.
Yet in a trailer that debuted this weekend at San Diego Comic-Con, one can glimpse a heated #Tiva embrace followed by a dress slipping to the floor… and presumably leading to more.
No matter how TV-MA things got, series co-lead de Pablo declined the services of an on-set intimacy coordinator, for any sensual scenes opposite longtime scene partner Weatherly.
As defined by SAG-AFTRA, an intimacy coordinator is “a liaison between actors and production, and a movement coach and/or choreographer in regards to nudity and simulated sex and other intimate and hyper-exposed scenes.” One of their duties includes “build[ing] an environment in which actors understand what is expected of them in hyper-exposed scenes and to give their informed and continued consent.”
De Pablo’s stance, though, was, “Did not need one,” the NCIS franchise vet shared with TV Insider. “They asked me first, I think because I’m a female and blah, blah, blah, and I said, ‘I don’t need one. Thank you for offering.’
“Michael and I have a lot of trust with each other and are great friends,” Ziva’s portrayer went on to explain. “So, when it comes to shooting these things, we don’t want to be micromanaged. We like to explore it, and we trust each other enough that we allow that to happen.”
Weatherly in turn said his own POV was, “‘Whatever Cote wants.’
“Love scenes are complicated because that level of nonverbal communication — you kiss someone the way you want to be kissed, or you touch someone the way you want to be touched — is a deep level of communication,” said Tony’s portrayer. “Physical interaction starts with trust. Luckily, Cote and I do not have an issue in that area. We had to do that right out of the gate in [NCIS‘ Season 3 ‘Under Covers’] episode,” in which Tony and Ziva posed as marrieds holed up at a cozy hotel.
The trust spoken of by de Pablo is notable in that during Weatherly’s post-NCIS, 2016-2022 Bull run, guest star Eliza Dushku was paid by CBS a $9.5 million settlement when it appeared that her confronting Weatherly about inappropriate on-set behavior ended her path to becoming a series regular.
