Baker Mayfield went through a rough time, but it was just as hard for his wife, Emily. On ESPN’s Monday Night Countdown, they opened up about how fame, football, and struggles almost broke their marriage.

Emily came out straight about it. “He was losing himself and I was watching it, you know, front and center,” she said. At one point, she admitted, “Our marriage was failing.”

Those words hit like a gut punch. Behind all the professional things going on, their home life was crumbling. She described those days as painful, watching her husband’s confidence and spirit slip away as the world kept judging every move he made.

When Baker’s Cleveland chapter closed and a brief part with the Panthers and Rams followed, the quarterback who once looked invincible found himself fighting to stay relevant. Emily said that period forced them both to rediscover who they were without football.

Off the field, the Mayfields welcomed their first child, marking a fresh start and showing how far they’d come.

Earlier this year, Baker spoke openly about that dark phase. “We weren’t doing well at all,” he admitted. “As a guy, you put on the mask. But behind closed doors, who are you really?
