9-1-1’s Angela Bassett Adds Fuel to Fan Theory Bobby’s Still Alive
While on Good Morning America, Bassett revealed that she’s not too sure what the future has in store for Athena at this time, as the series showrunners have kept her character’s fate “very vague” and largely under wraps. “I said, ‘Okay, I’m going through therapy, I’m processing it, so I’ll wait,” Bassett revealed.
The emotional Season 8 finale of 9-1-1, titled “Seismic Shifts”, certainly left Athena at a crossroads. After Bobby’s funeral, she began working to sell the house the two had built together, leaving fans wondering if she might be moving somewhere else entirely, setting Bassett up for a departure from the series.
9-1-1 Season 8 is streaming on Hulu.
9-1-1 star Angela Bassett has responded to a fan theory surrounding Bobby’s shocking Season 8 death. Fans have been hoping for the character to return to the series despite his demise.
“I know, I know. I mean, listen, it was [a closed casket]. So, yeah. He could be up to things,” the actor continued. However, it seems like Bassett was only joking, so 9-1-1 fans shouldn’t hold on to it as a sign of Bobby’s eventual return to the series. The two-part event that ended in Bobby’s death began with the 9-1-1 Season 8, Episode 14, “Sick Day.”
In a heroic and self-sacrificing move, it was revealed that Bobby’s oxygen tank connection was blown, and he begins to suffer organ failure while trying to help rescue others from a devastating fire. Bobby knew about his tank malfunctioning but chose to keep it to himself so that Chimney (Kenneth Choi) could be saved instead. Episode 15, titled “Lab Rats,” concluded with Athena (Bassett) and Bobby sharing an emotional talk before he died.
Athena and Bobby’s relationship was at the heart of 9-1-1, and fans are very curious about where the show would be headed without Bobby. Following his shocking death, Athena has been highly focused on her work, despite all the trauma and grief she’s experiencing. Episode 16, “The Last Alarm,” saw her investigating a house fire Bobby had previously looked into eight years ago, proving that the character is still fresh on everyone’s minds.
