On February 2, 2025, the Los Angeles Lakers made headlines in the NBA community by trading their star forward/center, Anthony Davis, to the Dallas Mavericks in exchange for Luka to Doncic. More than two months have passed since that trade, but Lakers GM Rob Pelinka does not regret the decision. He cites Doncic’s strong work ethic as a key reason for his confidence in the trade.
Prior to Game 2 of the Round 1 playoff series against the Minnesota Timberwolves, Pelinka participated in a riveting on-court interview. During this engaging discussion with Chris Geeter McGee and James Worthy, he praised Doncic for his amazing work ethic.
“He’s an illusionist. He does things on the basketball court that you don’t think are real. So you’ve got to show up to see it. You might see an online video or you might hear a legendary story, but until you’re here in the building seeing it live, you’re like ‘How did he do that?’” Pelinka said.
“I wanna see our guys come out and punch first… I wanna see our players defensively really get after the Timberwolves and make them feel us.”

Doncic delivered outstanding performances for the Lakers during the 2024-25 NBA regular season, helping the team secure the third seed with a record of 50 wins and 32 losses.
Rob Pelinka Discusses What Makes Luka Doncic’s Work Ethic Stand Out

Doncic delivered an outstanding performance in Game 2 of the playoff series against the Timberwolves, playing 42 minutes and scoring 31 points while also providing nine assists and grabbing 12 rebounds. However, stomach pain significantly impacted his performance in Game 3. In the same interview, Pelinka explained why he is impressed with Doncic’s work ethic.
“I’ll tell you, he’s been a great leader, in the gym every day, working hard at his craft. You can’t be one of the best players in the world without putting in the work. So it’s been good to see him at Health South, at our practice facility, the UCLA Health Training Center, putting in the work on a nightly basis to be great on the court for our fans,” Pelinka said.
The Lakers lost game 3 of the playoff series with a final score of 116-104. They will play game 4 at Target Center on April 27, 2025, at 3:30 PM ET.
