The One Chicago franchise has been known for making headlines over the years as cast members often come and go across all three shows: Chicago Fire, Chicago Med and Chicago P.D. Despite the large amount of cast changes, NBC’s president of program planning Jeff Bader previously explained why he wasn’t concerned about the future of the franchise.

“Cast comes in, cast goes out,” Bader told TVLine in an interview published in July 2024.“It’s interesting. Because every year there are cast changes, and every year someone asks the same question” about what’s going on within the One Chicago universe. “But [those shows] just keep going on.”

Bader noted that each of the Chicago shows has continued to find success, adding, “We’re thrilled with how the Chicagos do on Wednesday. We have no plans on changing anything on that night.”

Fans, however, are still worried about their favorite characters on Chicago Fire after multiple cast exits were teased ahead of season 14.

“We’re going to have a lot of turnover,” showrunner Andrea Newman told TVLine in May 2025. “And a lot craziness going on in the CFD from the top, where people are being cut and moved, and everything’s going to get shaken up next season. There will be hellos, and there will be goodbyes. I’ll say that. That’s for sure.”

Keep scrolling for a breakdown of who is — and isn’t — returning for season 14 so far:

Taylor Kinney

Us Weekly's 2025
While not everyone will remain on Chicago Fire, there is no show without Taylor Kinney‘s character, Kelly Severide.

David Eigenberg

Daniel Kyri Details Bond With Chicago Fire David Eigenberg
Despite being set up as the potential next fire chief, Herrmann (Eigenberg) revealed to Mouch (Christian Stolte) in the season 13 finale that he was stepping down to be a regular firefighter again. Eigenberg is expected to return as Herrmann in season 14.

Eamonn Walker

Eamonn Walker Return to Chicago Fire as Wallace Boden Will Be Suspenseful and Powerful

Walker played Wallace Boden for 12 seasons as a series regular before exiting the show. In May 2024, Deadline reported that it was Walker’s decision to officially step back after a brief absence. He was gone for a year before coming back in season 13.

“[We are] so excited to have our beloved Chief Boden back, and the episode, titled Post-Mortem, is a thrill ride unlike any we’ve done before,” Newman said in a March 2025 press release. “Told with flashbacks and unique POVs, Chief Boden leads our team on a search to discover the how, who, and why of a fierce firefight that ended in disaster.”

It isn’t clear whether Walker will return in season 14 but it doesn’t appear to be off the table.

While the expectation for now is that Stolte returns as Mouch, Newman made it clear that nothing is guaranteed.

“There’s nobody safe in this shakeup,” Newman told TV Insider in May 2025. “So next season is going to be about how the s**t really hits the fan once that mandate comes down and how things get shaken up and how our team can hold together as a family while all this craziness is happening around them.”

According to Deadline, Kyri, who plays Ritter, is the second actor reportedly leaving Chicago Fire after season 13. The outlet reported in April 2025 that the departures might be the result of alleged budget cuts — and there could be more casting shakeups.

With Carver applying for a job in Denver, his future with Violet appears to be at risk. Greensmith, however, is expected to remain on the show.

Jake Lockett

While Lockett didn’t reveal how Sam Carver would exit Chicago Fire, he previously confirmed reports of his departure.

“While I don’t exactly know what the future looks like, I do know that it won’t be exactly what it was and I am going to miss the hell out of that,” he wrote via Instagram in April 2025 ahead of season 14. “So much pride in this journey.”

Lockett continued: “It’s been an honor bringing Sam to life and to every one of you, thank you for the love and support over the past three years.”
