The Scrubs reboot has officially been greenlighted, receiving a straight-to-series order from ABC. Stars Donald Faison and Sarah Chalke have closed deals to return in their original roles alongside Zach Braff, who signed on for the follow-up in May. All three will executive produce.
Bill Lawrence, creator of the original series, executive produces the reboot, which has secured Scrubs alums Tim Hobert and Aseem Batra as showrunners and executive producers. Hobert was a writer, executive producer and consulting producer on Scrubs; Batra was a writer and story editor. Jeff Ingold and Liza Katzer also will EP the reboot on behalf of Lawrence’s production company, Doozer.
The new series will follow JD Dorian (Braff) and Christopher Turk (Faison), who scrub in together for the first time in a long time- medicine has changed, interns have changed, but their bromance has stood the test of time. Characters new and old navigate the waters of Sacred Heart with laughter, heart and some surprises along the way.
Judy Reyes, who played head nurse Carla Espinosa in the original series, is currently a series regular on ABC’s hit High Potential. However, sources reveal there have been positive scheduling conversations ongoing between Scrubs and the Kaitlin Olson-led crime drama to allow for her to do both.
Scrubs is the second new ABC scripted series for the 2025-26 season, joining drama 9-1-1: Nashville, which premieres in the fall. Scrubs likely will debut in midseason.
“Scrubs means so very much to me. So excited for the chance to get the band back together,” Lawrence shared in a statement.

The original series ran on NBC for seven seasons from 2001-08 and then on ABC for two more in 2009-10. It followed medical interns Dorian, Turk and Elliot Reid (Chalke) as well as other personnel at the Sacred Heart Hospital.
Of the reboot, Lawrence previously told Deadline that he envisions Scrubs 2.0 as a hybrid between a revival, revisiting original characters a decade and a half after the original series ended its run, and a reboot, bringing back the original concept with new surgical interns.
“We’ve been talking about a lot, and I think the only real reason to do it is a combo,” Lawrence said in October. “A: people wanting to see what the world of medicine was like for the people they love, which is part of any successful reboot. But B: I think that show always worked because you get to see young people dropped into the world of medicine, knowing young people that go there are super idealistic and are doing it because it’s a calling. There’s no cliché ‘rich doctors playing golf’ — that’s not what it is anymore. So I think that, no matter what it is, it would be a giant mistake not to do as a combo of those two things.”
Braff is repped by CAA, Range Media partners and attorney Ken Richman; Faison is repped by UTA and Fuller Law; Chalke is repped by UTA, Untitled and JSSK; Hobert is repped by IAG and Jared Levine.
